Seems that people back home are not happy. This has not been something I have seen or heard about other than stumbling across it on the internet. After asking some people about it back home, there was not much in the press there either. Living overseas makes it very easy to lose touch with what is happening but this is motivation to try and spend more time actively seeking out the news. If protests like this are not making the Australian news though, I am not sure what chance I have of finding out with the US news.

Glad I didn't miss anything then. Americans like to complain too. I guess they missed a golden opportunity.

Wishing other companies would follow this example and join the Open Patent Non-Assertion Pledge.  We've put 79 key cloud and big data patents into it.  Lets innovate, not litigate.

Yet another crazy experiment coming out of Google. If we can pull this off, it really could start making the worlds information available to everyone. I am lucky enough to sit around the corner from some of the guys on the team and it sounds like they are doing some really interesting things. I am looking forward to seeing where they go with this!

https://www.google.com/takeaction/ I think the site says it all.

Personally, I feel lucky to work for a company that has the power to affect change (hopefully in the right direction) to help keep people connected without fear of being censored. Anything that allows governments to increase the level of censorship and the control they have over their citizens rights to free speech is worth speaking up against.

I just hope they don't have some kind of easter egg in there somewhere. I don't think "surprise mother f..." and "self driving car" go very well together

After close to 4 years in the USA, I finally "threw a shrimp on the barbie"! These went down a treat and everyone seemed to enjoy them. thanks to +Jonathon Hunt for the idea. There was also a suggestion of drinking a Fosters while cooking it, but I was not willing to subject myself to that.

+Chris Talbot, I thought it would be worth it to spread the word about the dangers of the world. Friends don't let friends drink Fosters!

Life is hard sometimes... other times not so much so! This makes spending too much time at the office a little easier.

Probably not the exact spot... that is the view from work. When you make it over for a visit you can have breakfast there though!

An interesting read about Google and some of the early engineers that made the tools that I work with (both directly and indirectly) on a daily basis. I am glad they talk about a lot of these things as it can be hard to know what you can and can't talk about with others. The safe bet is to say nothing.

The article talks about some of the research papers that lead to things like Hadoop and NoSQL databases. Some of what is discussed is mentioned as being "old technology" that has been replaced but given I have worked at places where HP3000's were still used well after the official end of life it doesn't mean they are past their used by date. I just hope Google does not end up the same way as Xerox PARC and continues to publish papers that help bring new tools to the rest of the developer community.

I thought it sounded familiar. I am too young to know about that though! I think it came up when I was doing some reading around the launch of flights.google.com.

The food was nice and the view of the Bay Bridge and water was a pleasant backdrop. The service was good and the staff was very friendly and attentive.
