Last transit link for the day: Bloomberg and The Atlantic appear to have overstated Millenial (Gen Y) exuberance for buying cars by tens of millions of people.
Cross-posted from City Observatory. Will somebody teach the Atlantic and Bloomberg how to do long division? Today, we take down more breathless contrarian reporting about how Millennials are just as suburban and car-obsessed as previous generations. Following several stories drawing questionable ...

An emergency crew treats an injured 29-year-old man who was hit on his bike by a driver who turned left into his path. Police blamed the victim for carrying bags and talking on a phone. Photo: Belmont Police Department. When a 90-year-old driver turned left into the path of a man bicycling on ...

Study shows that congestion worsens if bike use rises without additional protected bike lanes. That was definitely my experience in SF in the 90s.
Michael Andersen blogs for The Green Lane Project, a PeopleForBikes program that helps U.S. cities build better bike lanes to create low-stress streets. Here's one reason the modern biking boom is great for everyone: more bicycle trips mean fewer car trips, which can mean less congestion for ...

Gonna miss the pole paint, but hard to argue they were helpful. "Muni’s Yellow Pole Markings at Transit Stops Will Be Replaced By Real Signs" http://sf.streetsblog.org/2015/04/23/munis-yellow-pole-markings-at-transit-stops-will-be-replaced-by-real-signs/ #sftranspo
The days of Muni stops marked with no visual cue except a utility pole with yellow paint and black stenciled letters are coming to an end. As part of the Muni Forward upgrades launching this weekend, the SFMTA will raise the standard for signage at every stop. At the very least, every stop will ...

Service apps as class warfare
I take two subways to work each morning. And every subway car is full of advertisement for Seamless, Grub Hub, PeaPod, Handy and the many apps that make up the errand economy. The advertising I see every day is telling me: I can make your life easier, if you’ll only let me.

New Muni map looks good, although I'm not sure I buy the Mark Twain influence.
This month, San Francisco will introduce a new transit map designed to give riders more information at a glance. First exhibited at SPUR in 2014 as part of our exhibition Urban Cartography, the new Muni map makes the complex web of San Francisco’s 82 municipal transit lines far easier to use and understand.

Fascinating that this is from LA... "LA Times Opposes CA Helmet Law, But Gets One Point Wrong" http://la.streetsblog.org/2015/03/20/in-mostly-sharp-editorial-times-opposes-mandatory-helmet-law/
Yesterday, the Los Angeles Times wrote a mostly thoughtful editorial against Senate Bill 192, Carol Liu's proposed mandatory helmet law for bicyclists. In the Times' opinion, there isn't enough evidence to show that helmets make bicycle riders safer to justify changing the law. Hear, hear.
