Excellent piece from my former colleague Bill.  I agree with this idea wholeheartedly.  Links are important, yes, but only insofar as they signal trust.  Sloppy content should count against a site.  Fact-checking can sometimes be a pain in the butt, yes, but should effectively separate the pretenders from the contenders.  Just make sure a fact is indeed a fact.

Nice piece by former colleague +Michael Martinez on how to keep all the major referrer botnets from bogging down your web server.  I'd also add to the block list another two sites, buttons-for-website dot com and 7makemoneyonline dot com.  They're hitting my sites pretty hard lately.

My team at BrightEdge just published this Panda 4.1 analysis. We see some evidence of the new signals Google mentioned, and some educated guesses about what a few of them may be.  Check it out.

My team at BrightEdge did a bit of research around changes in appearance rate, by industry, for "local pack" (eg Google Places) results with the Google Pigeon update in late July.  Pretty interesting data.

The Comparator has always been one of my favorite features of Majestic, in that it provides such a nice, understandable competitive snapshot, and really includes in one glance most of the key macro link quantity and quality metrics.
Interested to play around with the update to see what's new.

Can't ignore search or SEO.  ComScore says "core search" queries are up by 2 billion, from 17 to 19 billion, August 2013 versus August 2012.

Come hobnob with search geeks like, well, ME. And much more respectable types from the likes of Adobe, Microsoft and beyond. It really is a great venue for meeting others in the search and social trenches, maybe the BEST venue. I attended two of these before joining BrightEdge, and always found them immensely valuable. Palace Hotel. SF. Aug 22-23. Join us!
The most accomplished digital marketers will converge on San Francisco on August 22/23 for Share13. Will you be there?
