They tried to overcharge me a ton for a simple repair to my A/C unit. Fortunately, I looked it up and didn't hire them. It started with a $50 diagnostic, which I think is a fair price. I made the appointment over the phone after they quickly responded to my HomeAdvisor request. They came later that day. On the phone I specifically asked if they would tell me everything I need to repair the unit even if I don't have them do the repair (since I'm paying $50 for the appointment). They said yes, they would, but after the diagnostic was done the repair man ended up being quite upset that I wanted to know the specific broken part so I could check on the repair price. He tried to say that I needed to pay more for the diagnostic if I wasn't going to have them do the repair. But I didn't budge. The diagnostic took 5 minutes. The broken part was a dual capacitor (for the motor and compressor). They quoted $300 for the part and $50 for labor to do the repair. Sounds fine if you don't know anything about it. He actually had the broken part in his hand and the replacement part in his car, so it literally would not have taken any extra work for him to complete the repair. But labor is not the problem with the quote. However, it turns out that the capacitor only costs $8 on Amazon, with free shipping, or $24 at the local hardware store. I went with Amazon and did the repair myself. It's disgusting that he wanted to take advantage of my ignorance and charge $300 for the part. What a rip-off. No wonder he was upset that I wanted the information to look it up myself.
