Stolen Content on G+
There is so much stolen content on G+. One reason for this is people just don't know.
Did you know that taking a picture and giving credit for it NOT a defense for copyright infringement. Its just not. You must have permission to use that content ESPECIALLY if it is commerial in any way.
Now there is a "Fair Use" provision but that means you include someone's work in your body of work. Fair use is generally not taking another persons work and posting it and saying WOW. Besides, its freaking boring.
I really think that most of you could do better with your own content. Your own thoughts and opinions on topics that matter to you.
I would rather see a poorly taken and processed picture with a story, even 10 words than someone else's picture that you know nothing about.
Resharing that stolen content is not interesting to me either. If they don't own rights to it, then they can pass them on to you and you can be sued. I forget which stock photo company did it but they went after a whole bunch of folks. Those who shared it illegally to start with and those that reshared it.
I see a lot of people giving credit to photos by siting a Tumblr URL. What? That's not credit unless the person on Tumblr owned the rights tot he picture and most of that is stolen so why bother.
However, there is a way to get lots of high quality images and share them legally, without risk. Just like I'm doing here.
I got this picture from Flicker. Below you'll see I've provided a link to the author's Flickr profile. That's all they want. This is called a Creative Common
You can even go to advanced search on Flickr and search ONLY for pictures that have a CC license. In most cases, all you need to do is link to the persons profile or the picture.
If you want to modify it or use it for commercial purposes you need to check the rights that have been granted. I'll make a video one of these days to explain how to do that.
Yes, I know, people are getting into the What's Hot page by sharing this stolen junk. To me that's what it is. Junk.
When I look at my home stream, posting that kind of stuff is a great way to to get me to click the down arrow on the post and then click remove from circles. I don't want to see it. I guess others do though.
I just think G+ could be so much better than all these HDR pictures that don't look real to me posted with no information telling me what they are. I see a nice island photo without any text and I'm like "So what".
Again, I think your own content would do you much more good. It would be far more interesting to me and many others.
And keep the animated gifs to a minimum because they really slow down our PCs. :) I posted two the other day on my stream and it really slowed my profile down.
Don't sell yourself short, you do have interesting ideas. Share them. :) Have an opinion, take a stand. As Alice Cooper wrote "If you don't stand for something, you'll fall for anything". Now I probably didn't get that quote quite right but its close.
Soapbox closed. ;)
Last time I posted about this, I got my head tore off by you folks. Oh well, I'm still right. haha
