One more post before I quit for the day! All of these are from the 1921 biography of author Florence Barclay. Top left, with five of her eight children in 1886; bottom left, with the three youngest children in 1901; right, wearing her favorite style of a tailored but comfortable suit and her signature brushed back hairstyle in 1905. An energetic, talented, loving, amazing lady who is one of my all-time heroines. #FlorenceBarclay #antiquephoto #author #historicalfashion #historicaldressļ»æ

Author Florence Barclay at age 12 (top left), just before her wedding at age 18 (right), and at age 28 in 1890. She had her own unique sense of style and struck out on her own when what was fashionable didn't suit her. After her mid-20s, she cut her hair to shoulder length and brushed it straight back from her forehead, creating a Gibson-esque look without the fuss and bother of hair rats or false fronts. She loved the practical, tailored suits of the 1910s and wore them traveling, hiking, and even skiing! I just love this lady. #author #Victorianfashion #FlorenceBarclay #historicaldress #historicalfashionļ»æ

I'm rereading the biography of an author who has had a huge influence on my life since age 13. I last read this bio when I was 17 or 18, and I'm appreciating it even more now. This great lady wrote novels in the early 1900s that profoundly influenced what I wanted to be when I grew up. She was a rector's wife and did so much in her parish and in her family...and wrote wonderful stories and novels to boot. Hers was a beautiful, beautiful life, focused on others. Her novels (written in the early 1900s) are all peopled with women just as whole-souled, strong, and lovely as herself (Jane Dalmain has long been my ideal). Well worth reading! Start with The Rosary (the title refers to a song the main character sings). Many thanks to my mother for introducing me to this overlooked writer so many years ago! ā¤ļø šŸ“š #goodbook #Sundayreading #books #reading #goodreads #FlorenceBarclayļ»æ

Just had to repost this one, because it reflects what I've been thinking as I've seen Pippa's wedding photos today. šŸ˜ Goes along with an article I posted on my Facebook page about the new trend for wedding gowns--very classy and ladylike. šŸ‘ŒšŸ¼ #Repost @katrinaariana (@get_repost) 惻惻惻 Oh my goodness! I can't get over how much I love Pippa Middleton's stunning lace bridal gown and the entire blush pink wedding! šŸ˜ It looks like Kate was in the wedding party for all practical purposes - there were those who had said that Kate would not be her attendant so as to not upstage her. I loved the vintage car, the wedding bells, the cascading flowers, and the adorable children! Pippa looked radiant with her hair pulled back in that updo and wearing such a stately tiara and veil. I almost think I like the overall feel of this wedding better than Will and Kate's. It was very romantic and old fashioned, and I only hope they release photographs of the ceremony and reception at some point! #almostaroyalwedding #pippamiddleton #duchessofcambridge #pippawedding #jamesmatthews #dukeofcambridge #royalweddingļ»æ

Sometimes it's the simplest projects that yield the greatest satisfaction. Nothing fancy or complex about three elastic waist skirts for my little girls today, but they have grinned and pirouetted all afternoon! #kids #simpleskirt #skirt #sewing #sewingtogether #makeityourselfļ»æ

Happy Mother's Day to the woman who taught me everything! She put me on the road to pattern design by copying vintage outfits and film costumes I wanted to wear, teaching me to sew, then putting up with my perfectionist meltdowns when I couldn't figure out how to do something right the very first time. šŸ˜‚ She's Supermom to me, she's "Grammie" to my children, she's "Mama Jennie" to the ladies in the Kenyan sewing guild (whom she taught in 2012), and so much more. Thank you, Mom! ā¤ļø #mymother #thankyoumom #mothersday #supermomļ»æ

From the Show & Tell archives: "Iā€™m from Sydney, Australia. I did textiles in year 12 (2005). For my year 12 major work I did a Regency gown and I bought your pattern. ~ Elizabeth H-C." Isn't this smashing? Love that delicate #embroidery! #historicaldress #historicalsewing #historicalfashion #Regency #regencybeauty #regencydress #ballgownļ»æ

Teenaged Shirley Temple designing a dress for her half-scale mannequin, ca. 1941. This comes from my beloved pen pal, Dot, who has been exchanging letters with me since I was 14 years old (she turns 90 this year!).
