Three days of #FallforCostume in one: pleats, sparkles, and noir! This wonderful ca. 1912 dinner dress by House of Drécoll makes my heart skip a beat. I love the draped pannier-style overskirt, the sheer kimono-shaped overbodice, and the glass paste beads to lend that touch of elegance. ❤👌🏼(Collection of the @metmuseum.) #historicalfashion #historicaldress #titanicera #1910sfashion #eveninggown

Today's #FallforCostume theme is #WIP, and this is as far as I've gotten on my next project. Well, I did buy fabric, and I do have the pattern I designed, but my sewing tools are all in trunks except for my machine and a couple of measuring tapes. As soon as I can unpack and settle, this is my next make: 1957 Dior Palais de Glacé dress. And my goal is to wear it in Paris! #1950sDior #1950sstyle #1950sdress #vintagestyle #retrostyle #Dior

My favorite #technique is #draping. My mother taught me how to do it as a teen, and I love playing around with fabric on my dress form until I get exactly what I'm seeing in my mind's eye. This is the mock-up for a 1930s evening gown I draped earlier this year to wear to a formal event. I had such a good time doing it that I'll be back at 1930s draping as soon as I unpack my sewing things! #FallforCostume #1930sdress #1930sfashion #vintagestyle #retrostyle @redthreaded

For today's #FallforCostume theme of #blue, I am reposting my eldest daughter's Cinderella gown, which she made to wear to the prom a couple of years ago with only a little assistance from me. I am so proud of her work, and she has definitely caught the #cosplay bug. You'll be seeing her again this month! #cinderella #ballgown #costume #filmcostume #moviecostume

There is a story behind these #buttons. Way back in 1996, I started sewing historical gowns for women locally, and I constantly scoured antiques shops for materials and trimmings. One day I found an entire jar of mother-of-pearl buttons the seller had harvested off Victorian and Edwardian garments (😫😭). I asked if I could buy them all. With a nasty look in her eye, she said, "Sure...if you count them all out and pay by the button." Not to be beaten, I came back the next day and did exactly that! 1,008 buttons were mine for $50.40. I have probably used a little less than half in the past 22 years, and they still make me smile every time I run across them in my stash. We #FallforCostume hard, don't we? 😉 #historicalfashion #antiquebuttons #motherofpearl #sewing #historicalsewing @redthreaded
