A fifth of this man's frontal lobe has been removed and the majority of the court states "there is no evidence Clayton isn't capable of understanding his circumstances." Eight percent of his brain had to be extracted after an accident over 40 years ago caused extreme damage and he continues to be scheduled for an execution. The conversation completely circumvents the obvious evidence that discredits the death penalty as a form of crime reduction or even the science that attests to the role the frontal lobe plays in compulsivity and decision making. It's obvious Missouri intends to beat its punishment by death record of 10 last year in 2014 by starting off strong this year (with one already performed and another by the end of this week). #psychology   #evidence  for #scientific   #facts

If there were a way to screen pilots for suicidal tendencies, at what point would our society be crossing the line into completely discriminating an entire demographic of mentally ill individuals? If deliberation can have you fired, who is to say that we aren’t establishing the foundation for the punishment of #thoughtcrime  ? The conversation should be less about ways to filter out the disease and more about concern for the victims and the creation of a cure. This man performed a terrible act with rippling consequences, but this is not entirely dissimilar from the suffering that echoes in the #suicide  of one person every 40 seconds.

Our condolences go out to the family and friends of Madison Holleran. Not all pain is noticed and not all forms of suffering can be treated, but there is a responsibility to our society to attempt to lift the notion that mental illness is synonymous to weakness. To claim that it is primarily a “women’s issue” adds to the stigma that mental health is less weighty than any other form of healthcare. Mental illness is not constrained by any single demographic or sport, it exists regardless of amount of friends, beauty, self-esteem, academic achievement, or financial situation.

When I imagine a rural city, I think of tightly knit neighborhoods, rolling meadows, hand-built homes, and generation's worth of memories. My thoughts didn't wander into the possibility of suicide, but perhaps it should have. There are no populated places immune to mental illness, but believing there are contributes to its stigmatization. Doors that keep its victims shut in never open up to the idea that there is no blame, treatments exist, and the worst can be prevented. #mentalhealth   #prevention

Medical knowledge should not be mistaken for medical wisdom. It is incorrect to assume that the shifting of resources towards #technology   to obtain health information means that doctors are lending their power to the internet. Using Google to provide a patient centric environment where it is due is The Mayo Clinic's way of embracing digitalization as an aid, not a replacement.   #mhealth   #quantifiedself

What happens when Depression creeps in without notice? Sometimes symptoms fall under unrecognizable categories that take months or even years of tracking down to diagnose. Anger, irritability, physical pain, or perfectionism can look like inherent character flaws but may actually be the consequences of an underlying issue. Is Depression always noticeable? No. Are there ways to treat it and get back on track towards recovery? Absolutely. #depression   #mentalhealth   #patientmonitoring   #psychology

If the cases for Parkinson’s Disease are expected to double by 2020, so should the technology meant to diagnose and treat it. New monitoring methods could be the difference between receiving proper care and expecting the full-blown effects of this disease and others. #technology   that can monitor the symptoms of mental illnesses and neurodegenerative diseases are not only improving treatments in current patients, but are providing data that increases the efficacy of medications and aid. #MobileTherapy   is similar to PERFORM in that it uses past and current information to develop future diagnoses and methods of prevention. #telehealth   #quantifiedself    http://onforb.es/1K7eq7A
