Derek Nelson is an Optical Navigation Engineer for the Space Navigation and Flight Dynamics (SNAFD) Practice at KinetX Aerospace, Inc.  KinetX is responsible for providing end-to-end interplanetary navigation solutions for the New Horizons mission to Pluto, OSIRIS-REx mission to Bennu, and MESSENGER mission to Mercury.  KinetX provides a wide range of navigational support from mission design to spacecraft/planetary orbit estimation to end-of-life operations.  Derek specifically supports optical navigation planning, development, and operations, while continuing development and verification of KinetX’s star-based optical navigation software suite.

During this discussion, Mr. Nelson will discuss KinetX’s participation in the New Horizons and OSIRIS-REx missions, with a particular focus on the role and purpose of optical navigation solutions within the broader context of spacecraft navigation.

Mike Mackowski has been an Engineer at Orbital Sciences Corporation for over 14 years. He has extensive experience in the design of spacecraft subsystems and space vehicle concepts, as well as the analysis of spacecraft requirements and performance. He will be talking about career paths in the space industry and will take your questions during the question and answer session! Please join us for this wonderful SpaceTalks discussion and see below for an excerpt from Mr. Mackowski's digital autobiography:

"The nation is still in a space funk. We never committed to a real follow-on to the space shuttle. The shuttle was a technological wonder but operationally a wrong turn. You don’t need a manned vehicle to deliver heavy payloads to orbit. Splitting crew delivery from cargo makes sense, and having it done “commercially” (whatever that means) is a good approach. I like having private industry develop a new generation of Earth to LEO crew taxis as it frees up NASA to focus on deep space opportunities. If private companies can make a buck mining asteroids, that would be wonderful."

Former NASA Astronaut Clay Anderson will be talking about his career path and his momentous journey. He will also elaborate on his experiences as an astronaut and will talk about factors that shaped his career. Please join SEDS-USA for this great discussion!

“Astro Clay” –Astronaut Clayton C. Anderson– applied 15 times before NASA selected him as an astronaut in 1998; and he spent 30 years working for NASA, as an engineer and astronaut. Succeeding in one of the most difficult and coveted jobs in the world through perseverance and a never-give-up mantra, Anderson employs NASA’s “Plan, Train and Fly (Execute)” philosophy, along with lessons learned in the areas of leadership, persistence and passion, to bring your group unique and “out of this world” insight for achieving practical execution.
