Inside the Hellscape Where Our Computers Go to Die: "On the northwest side of Agbogbloshie, boys built a bridge with old monitors. There are so many monitors in Agbogbloshie that it was turned into a raw material for construction. Towers are built from keyboards and refrigerators are used as walls for houses. Very careful with this item. Most (if not all) of that waste is generated in Africa. It is often mischaracterized as Western dumping, when it is actually a problem of discards from the African continent. This is a myth that refuses to die, and clouds the real issues surrounding ewaste reform.

Preternatural machines: "In 807 the Abbasid caliph in Baghdad, Harun al-Rashid, sent Charlemagne a gift the like of which had never been seen in the Christian empire: a brass water clock. It chimed the hours by dropping small metal balls into a bowl." http://buff.ly/1EXlFQ0

The Astronaut's Wife, a poem by Anne Babson

I longsufferingly confide you to the shadow
As I stare at the capsule slipping in orbit
Behind the chalky, round lamp inconstant, and I
Imagine you cradled in space, suckled by tubes,

Wordless as you curve back this way invisible,
The substance now of things hoped for later, not too
Much later, I hope, the evidence of things not
Seen, things seen soon, I hope against hope, and I wait...
A poem by Anne Babson. I longsufferingly confide you to the shadow...

How electric light changed the night: "Before the dawn of electric light in the early 20th century, humans mostly took cues from the Sun to determine when to sleep and when to stay awake. Now, however, our exposure to artificial light sources is nearly constant." http://buff.ly/1DObwPn

How Companies and Services Like Facebook Are Shaped by the Programming Languages They Use: "When the Japanese computer scientist Yukihiro Matsumoto decided to create Ruby, a programming language that has helped build Twitter, Hulu, and much of the modern Web, he was chasing an idea from a 1966 science fiction novel called Babel-17 by Samuel R. Delany." http://buff.ly/1HwQlHA

Fit the Tool to the Person, Not the Person to the Tool: "I recently had a conversation with a student about the ethical quandaries raised by the advent of self-driving cars. Hypothetically, for instance, how would a self-driving car react to a pedestrian who stepped out in front of it? Whose safety would it be programmed to privilege?" http://buff.ly/1MQvjIy

You're Distracted. This Professor Can Help. : Technology : The Chronicle of Higher Education: "To complete her homework assignment, Meran Hill needed total concentration. The University of Washington senior shut the blinds in her studio apartment. She turned off the music. She took a few deep breaths. Then she plunged into the task: Spend 15 minutes doing e-mail." http://buff.ly/1OK2mMH
