Numbers from the US book and ebook market 2013:
"E-books hit a record high in terms of units in 2013, but trade paperbacks remain the number one trade format. E-book units increased 10.1% from 465.49m in 2012 to 512.70m in 2013, but revenue was mostly flat, down 0.7% from $3.06bn in 2012 to $3.04bn in 2013.
Downloaded audiobooks hit all-time highs in both revenue and units, with revenue up 19.2% from $228.83m in 2012 to $272.82m in 2013.
A total of 1,616 publishers provided data for the report, some directly and some from distributors on behalf of their publisher clients."

Elsewhere, in the sales department of some publishing start-up ;-)

“Look down at that little black box right in front of you. You see it? It’s a wonderful little invention called the telephone. Here, I’ll spell it for you: T-E-L-E-P-H-O-N-E. Now, guess what, everybody? This telephone won’t dial itself! Yeah, that’s right. Until you take some fucking action, it’s nothing more than a worthless hunk of plastic. It’s like a loaded M16 without a trained Marine to pull the trigger. See, it’s the action of a highly trained Marine—a trained killer—that turns an M16 into a deadly weapon. And in the case of the telephone it’s the action of you—a highly trained Strattonite, a highly trained killer who won’t take no for an answer, who won’t hang up the phone until his client either buys or dies, someone who’s fully aware that there’s a sale being made on every single phone call and that it’s only a question of who’s selling who. Were you the one who did the selling? Were you proficient enough and motivated enough and gutsy enough to take control of the conversation and close the sale? Or was it your client who did the selling—explaining how he couldn’t make the investment right now because the timing was wrong or he needed to talk it over with his wife or his business partner or Santa Claus or the fucking tooth fairy.” (Jordan Belfort)

My take on online-reading and books in browsers:
Add a location to your Tweets. When you tweet with a location, Twitter stores that location. You can switch location on/off before each Tweet and always have the option to delete your location history. Learn more. Turn location on. Not now. Turn off location ...

Somebody, A Messaging Service By Miranda July - http://somebodyapp.com/ - Have a look at this amazingly convincing commercial trailer for Somebody App! I am convinced, Mrs. July will sell this app for a gazillion USD to somebody.
Somebody is a messaging service created by Miranda July with support from Miu Miu. When you send your friend a message through Somebody, it goes — not to your friend — but to the Somebody user nearest your friend. This person (likely a stranger) delivers the message verbally, acting as your stand-in.

Publishing and Digital Distribution
Introduction
Publisher, ebook professional, publishing consultant and entrepreneur with a strong focus on international digital distribution of ebook content, marketing and data analysis and data driven retail marketing.

Founder and Managing Director of publishing start-up Publishing Data Networks (SPIEGEL group), developing ‚Monitor‘, a tool for sales and marketing data analysis designed for publishers and authors.

As an entrepreneur it has always been my claim to introduce innovative technology into publishing, turn it into valuable and useful products, services and tools in order to support ebook publishers, intermediaries and retailers.

In 2007, I founded "Zentrale Medien", Germany’s first digital aggregator and one of the first ebook conversion houses, re-branded as KN-digital in 2009 after acquisition by Koch, Neff & Volckmar, Germany’s largest book wholesaler & distributor. KN digital has been converting and distributing ebooks for major publishers like Rowohlt (Holtzbrinck/Macmillan), DTV, Campus, WBG, Aufbau, etc.

From 2009, I worked for VVA (arvato, Bertelsmann AG), one of the largest book distributors in Germany, shipping books and ebooks for major (trade) publishers like Random House, Lübbe, Hanser, Kosmos, DuMont, O’Reilly. At VVA, I was Director of Digital Content Distribution, responsible for the development of media asset management and ebook distribution software BIC-Media (www.bic-media.de).

For many years I have been consulting (European) publishers, intermediaries, retailers and institutions on ebooks, digital distribution, ebook retail marketing and data analysis.
