Blog as partner
So, I'm alone. Single. Yeah, yeah, we've been over that. But, without that, sometimes I'm not accountable.  I don't have anyone to confide in, to tell me what to do.  The last post was about my depression. Having written it and having confessed I decided to...

Numb
I'm numb. Because this keeps happening. We go to Bridgewater Plaza several times a year. It's a place my children love. Two people I didn't know were murdered there in cold blood, doing the same job that so many of my friends do. All because some asshole co...

Notes That Were Episode #6
So, I'm going through all of the audio in my archive in the hopes of sorting it out somehow. And I came across this episode of The Notes That Were, a podcast I did from 2005 to 2007 but never published because the content is likely not palatable to most peo...

I've been watching this show with my children. It's a very good show, and there's a lot of pathos in this story. It's also framed in the episode with an expedition that the good  guys are going to see a movie they had filmed in the previous episode called Pokemon in Love. This backstory is shown when they're supposed to be watching that film, and it's really quite astonishing how powerful it is to me.

Meowf is the only Pokemon who can talk. He hangs out with these inept bad guys called Team Rocket. This is the 72nd episode and until now we had no idea why he could talk. Turns out he did so to impress this female Meowf (the only time I've ever seen gender depicted in a Pokemon type). He wants to say he's better than her human caretaker. He works so hard to learn to walk and to learn to talk to get the girl.

This probably doesn't make any sense if you've never seen the show, but it's the best example of how deep this show can go at times. My children know all of the Pokemon, what their powers are, how to play the game, and it's good to know that in all of that is a set of stories I can share with them.

I had to write this somewhere. I may be going nuts.

Very Early Joy Division. I've never heard it before this listen as I type. This is how I sing. I wish I had a band like this to grow with. This is a form of making music that we need to keep going.

This song keeps playing over and over again in my head. Does anyone else feel the pull of the words?

A depression day
No need to panic. No need to cry. No need to worry, either. But today is a depression day. Actually, this whole week has been like that.  I didn't want to get out of bed today. I woke up at 6:00 and my fantasy is that I can somehow become a morning person. ...

The end of romantic foibles
After at least three dozen uncomfortable and awkward dates, a couple of really good first dates that didn't lead anywhere and one broken heart I've still not recovered from, I have decided to pull the plug on my online dating account after nearly seven year...

Time travel back to 2005
I don't think I can listen to this , but maybe I should.  In November 2005, I was part of a panel discussion sponsored by the Virginia Piedmont Technology Council on blogs, podcasting and RSS. I may have even written about it in the past on this blog, but I...

Joy Division has always jumped out to me as the serious band of late seventies UK punk. Gang of Four and Buzzcocks were so much better than the Sex Pistols, but Joy Division touches upon the despair of being human in a way that no one else has really ever captured.

So it's good to hear a simple punk rock song by them, like this one. Any one of us can pick up a guitar and sing our frustrations with a few chords as back-up. We need more of that. Average people thinking they can change the world after belting out a few of what they might consider personal anthems.

The power of making music
When I am in my most stressful moments, snippets of lyrics I've sang in the past generally save me.  I don't share all of music with the world, because I don't have the time to perfect it. I do it for me, because I need something to save me at times of seve...

Malcolm Tucker and the Doctor
I was just getting used to finally accepting Peter Capaldi as the Doctor when someone at Buzzfeed decided to point out 21 ways in which we can swear like Malcolm Tucker .  If you click, it's decidedly not for people who can't handle profanity, obscenity, ab...
