Many moons ago, I was experimenting with a web art app on DeviantArt, called 'Muro', and created a robot piece in it. Last year, a friend told me about this website called hitRECord, which was a collaborative community of creative types started by Joseph Gordon-Levitt, where one can upload material of theirs for others to use/modify/remix. Recently, they've even had a TV show air 8 episodes on a channel called 'Pivot'. One of the first pieces I uploaded caught the eye of someone who was a driving force on the site. Then another person took a short story snippet by the first person, and created a remixed illustration for it using a mix of art, of which this robot was the primary aspect. That caught a chunk of attention, also resulting in various people riffing off of that image/story combo. I uploaded other things, here and there, but nothing caught attention like the robot piece.

Fast forward. Computer OS reinstall/upgrade issues caused me to get sidetracked from a number of things, and I never logged back into the site. Health issues, hardware overhaul, and another OS reinstall/upgrade. Months later, I finally get around to logging back into the website. I've got a number of notifications, including 12 for remixes that include the piece in some capacity (even if the piece isn't used, they list it as part of the subject if it was inspiration or such). Then I ran across a test animated short that someone did... animating said robot... animating something of my creation. I watched it, and was extremely impressed. Then I scrolled up to a more recent notification, to find an official call-out for collaborators, to turn it into an extended short. Being pushed by the official hitRECord feeds.

And I was floored.

The YouTube link is for the all call, with a really good pitch, and multiple snippets of the test animation piece. The link to the full version, which isn't on YouTube directly, can be found here:

This guy is GOOD.

Initially I ran across this via a wimp.com link that a friend shared, but then followed the information link there back to his YouTube page. I'm not going to share the link to his page itself-- if you can't figure that out from clicking on this YouTube video link, you probably shouldn't be using the internet. :)

Older article, but these are very well done. The artist, Jason Mark, is a quite talented 3D artist. You can find a couple more from that particular batch, as well a number of others, via his Digital Portfolio, which can be found here:

I cannot begin to articulate just how awesome this is. Yes, it's a full album. Yes, you can listen to it in it's entirety. Yes, you can download it for free.

You're welcome.

Here's a question we never thought to ask: how would Andrew Lloyd Webber's rock opera about the life of Jesus play with the Muppets? Now we know, thanks to the Muppet Christ Superstar album, with Kermit as Jesus, Gonzo as Judas, Miss Piggy as Mary Magdalene, and a chorus of clucking proto-Christian chickens.

My wife, who has all of the lyrics from the original memorized, is upstairs listening to this and giggling like a school girl.

As my friend Dell puts it, we should be looking into utilizing this sort of thing for Mars (and other foreign astronomical body) exploration. Some tweaking between NASA/ESA/etc. as well as private sector developers, making them more durable and such. I think they would probably need some dust-proofing, in addition to solar panels, and perhaps a kinetic-powered battery of some sort (to take advantage of hill rolls and the like). Probably some sort of larger drone unit, to be able to process the information. If they went that route, and were smart about it, they'd set them up to communicate with each other, not only allowing potential hive mind function, but the ability to play relay tether in a line, as well.

Even when The Muse isn't cooperative, I try to average at least one attempt at speedpainting per day, if not more. This is much easier to do digitally, as there's no concern of canvas, materials, or the like. That doesn't necessarily mean that they get turned into a "finished" piece (relatively speaking), or that they even get more than a few minutes invested in them. I won't even begin to contemplate how many partial attempts get scrapped because they're just going nowhere (I'm getting better than I was about that, but a large chunk of creative attempt still gets deleted). Here are 2 examples of speedpaintings from the last 2 days that have aspects that I like, but weren't doing for me as a whole.

What makes these interesting is that, on a whim, I decided to play with both pieces together-- and something far more interesting started to avail itself. While I won't be posting that WIP yet, I thought I'd at least post a side-by-side of the two here, for those who wanted to see them simultaneously.

...And in one quick Instagram post, Browncoats everywhere go nuts.

Well played, Dr. Swanson. Well played, indeed.
Last week, NASA astronaut Steve Swanson sent the first Instagram from space. It was a selfie, naturally, taken before the ISS cupola. But what caught our eye wasn't Swanson's handsome mug or the view of Earth. It was Swanson's shirt, which features a familiar spacecraft and the words: "Shipping & Logistics: Everything's Shiny."
