A fantastic write up on Google+

Sorry but this is going to be a rather long post. I never really liked the idea of Facebook (no this post isn't going to be about Facebook bashing); socialising with people you know online just seemed a little odd to me. If I want to socialise with someone I know I would pick up the phone, or send an email, and say something like: “Hows things? Fancy a pint?” Yada yoda yada... I understand that it can be a great way to keep in touch with people who live far away, but again, for me, picking up the phone or sending an email would be the preferred choice. Twitter, on the other hand, I quite liked and learned a few things by using it. But I found it frustrating; with the character limit and what you could actually post on it.

Then Google+ started up, “Oh no, not another one.” I thought. But there was something about the potential of G+ that sparked my enthusiasm. And I’m glad it did. What a fantastic system; if you want to use it as a way of chatting with people you know, great!, you can do that. Simply create a circle and stick your nearest and dearest in it then chat away to your hearts content within your virtual domain. Safe in the knowledge that, as long as you have set your privacy settings correctly, your digital doors are locked shut to the outside world.

As I have said, personally if I want to talk to people close to me I prefer using other methods. The thing that really caught my eye about G+ was the idea of taking a virtual stroll through the worlds biggest gallery of original and creative art and ideas, or reading through the latest, up-to-the-second, news from around the world on things that interest me, without having to plough through a lot of irrelevant rubbish. So that is exactly what I have done, and what a wonderful experience it has been for me so far. It is fantastic to sit back and watch my stream flow past, reading this and watching that, and learning a considerable amount about various things by doing so.

But the main reason for this post is because of a couple of comments I have had; “Who are you and why are you following me?”, or “Do I know you?” It seems a little pointless to join something like G+ and then shut your doors in some paranoid frenzy. If I am following you it is because, either: I have read something you posted and found it interesting or your name appeared in my suggestions from Google. I then read your profile (if you have written one), or look at your posts; if I find what you have to say, or the work you exhibit, interesting then great, if not I will remove you from my circles. I'm not interested in trying to get as many followers as some of the high rollers, I am interested in learning about new things and talking about interesting ideas with interesting people.

It is a bit worrying, and a bit weird, when someone takes offence that you dare to add them to your circles and read what they have posted to the world; if you want to hide away, DON'T post it public. If you want to know who I am read my profile, I have taking a lot of time and great care to fill it out, if you want to know more about me then go to my blog, and you will find out that I am just a normal guy with a passion for science and technology who has decide to take time out to follow his dream.
