Amanda survives past her life expectancy, and there's cake
Happy un-birthday to Amanda! On February 28, 2014, we went to the Nova Scotia Cancer Centre in Halifax to get the results of a scan. As I wrote in a painful article here a few days later , the doctors told us her ovarian cancer had returned and the prognosi... #ovariancancer   #cancer   #teal

I just found out that Google Authorship markup doesn't exist any more. That kind of led me back to Google+, where I haven't been doing much of anything for a good long time. But hey, I'm still out here, y'all. Been busy with, y'know, moving provinces, raising baby, rockin' life with Amanda as she continues to fight cancer and all that. Barger's Law -- the more interesting your life gets, the less you post....and vice versa. You can find me, as always, at http://www.thesimpsonblog.com.

Got a note on Twitter from the fine folks at Mint Records saying they've put a classic Cub t-shirt back into print! Not seen since, what, 1993, when Bill and Randy created shirts in the style of Sub Pop's logo. How about that?! For just under $15, you can represent! I think I'm down to a single ...

I don't know why I was surprised the food from East Foodies was so good, but it was, and I feel a little ashamed of my expectations. I mean, it's a tiny place in a little plaza in a quiet part of Lakeside. I'd never heard anyone recommend it, but we decided to try it. The food was hot and flavourful and the portions were generous. We've had take-out a couple of times and it was always ready promptly. The only reason we don't get it more often is that we want so many different things that we end up spending upwards of $50 on an order just to get those big, tasty servings. I've enjoyed some fine Chinese food in Halifax -- if I still lived near Jeans or Great Wall, I'd eat their stuff. But in this end of town, East Foodies is a solid win.

I've yet to have a bad meal at Cheachie's, and keep telling all my friends about it. Halifax has a lot of "gourmet" burger joints, but this one seems to escape attention most of the time. It's tucked away in an industrial plaza in the Bayers Lake Business park, so you might not know it's even there. Cheachie's does Italian, Mexican and burgers...I've only had the burgers. Actually, I've only had the Big Earl several times. It's an 8-oz patty, an onion ring, BBQ sauce, cheese and perhaps some other stuff. The bun is soft but not mushy. The patty is flavourful without being over-seasoned. I usually avoid BBQ sauce on burgers and pizzas, but this stuff is quiet enough. The bacon is just crispy enough to go with the beef. The onion ring is a nice treat. The fries are simple and perfect. Cheachie's has other burgers that are better suited to contest eating -- my wife keeps egging me on to try one like the Insano or the Pounder, with a half-pound of beef and a half-pound of bacon. The Big Earl is good enough that I'd consider it.

The closest you'll get to Pizza Hut in the Greater Timberlea Area. Pan pizzas are more oily than an oven- or stone-baked pie -- that's not a complaint. Not quite as greasy as Pizza Hut. Toppings are diced finely -- it makes for less pulling-off of your larger toppings, but more falling-off of small things like bacon or sausage. Sauce is decent. Also try the panzerotti, available baked or deep-fried. I like baked. Wife likes fried. Both are good.

My wife and I went to White Point for our honeymoon in 2009 and enjoyed our stay. With a baby on the way, we wanted a weekend getaway and returned to the new White Point. The main lodge was rebuilt after it was destroyed in a fire, and the new facilities are great. Our room looked exactly as it did in '09 but with a new flatscreen TV. The food is terrific. The service is exceptional. We enjoyed the games room, although it was hot in there and smelled bad. Probably just a temporary problem. Each time we've been has been in bad weather and we still had a memorable good time. I can only imagine it's spectacular when the weather is good. I look forward to a time when we can go back. It's always "a great day at White Point."
