"Old friends, winter companions, the old men
Lost in their overcoats, waiting for the sun
The sounds of the city sifting through trees
Settles like dust on the shoulders of the old friends"
-- Old Friends by Paul Simon

Two park benches overlooking the almost frozen ice filled waters of Lake Michigan from McKinley Park in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.   And although it looks really cold, it was a balmy 39 degrees when I took the shot.

ha! hehe of course I wouldn't just leave a one word comment and a plus 1 without coming back to tell you how much I really love this photo ;) The simplicity of the two benches is well balanced and the minimalism is very peaceful to the eye. How many textures did you use? Keep these coming!

"We have to confront ourselves. Do we like what we see in the mirror? And, according to our light, according to our understanding, according to our courage, we will have to say yea or nay - and rise!"
-- Maya Angelou

I hate taking self-portraits.  I really don't like having photos taken of me either.  That being said, I've have been thinking about this particular shot ever since we moved into our current apartment in June.  Finally got around to actually shooting the damn thing yesterday.  While I'm never happy with the way I look in pictures, I'm quite pleased with the result.

As a photographer and artist, I’m always trying new things so I can continue to improve on what I have done and perhaps create something not done before.

The entrance to the town of Bedrock?  Jurassic Park?

No, this stone arch marks the entrance to the Milwaukee Rotary Centennial Arboretum.   A 40 acre site of reclaimed post-industrial land and Milwaukee river frontage.

Hey folks!  Spring is just around the corner (really, it is!  At least in the Northern Hemishpere) and daylight savings time starts in the US this weekend.  Because of that, and just for the hell of it,  I'm offering 20% any and all prints from my web store for the whole month.  Just use coupon "Spring20" at checkout.   Stop by, have a look around, leave a comment or two, and get some great photos for your wall at home.

Yeah, it's been cold here in Milwaukee.  Not a lot of snow, but certainly cold.

It's been just a tad bit cold here in Milwaukee the past few weeks. As you may be able to see here (look closely), there is a little bit of ice on this chain link fence and gate.

The North Point Lighthouse along the Lake Michigan shoreline in Lake Park, Milwaukee Wisconsin. The lighthouse was originally completed in 1855, rebuilt at it's present location in 1887 and finally raised to it's current height of 74 feet in 1912. It was taken out of service and closed by the US Coast Guard in 1994. In 2007, the lighthouse reopened to the public.

In the processing of this image, I was inspired by the lighthouse paintings of Edward Hopper.

Emotion.  Mood.  Feelings.  This is what I capture through my photographs.  Whether it is landscapes, architectural elements, still life, or macros - it is a very personal journey as my own fears, triumphs, beliefs, and shortcomings are exposed with each photo.

Much of what I shoot is done spontaneously without preconceived thought or plan.  I let what is around me dictate what is photographed.

And the shooting is only the first step - a jumping off point.  I take the raw images and create what I see in my mind’s eye.  Coaxing out textures present in the shot – sometimes adding them.  Enhancing the contrast of light and dark to create the mood and emotions I felt and feel.  In the end, it’s all about listening to my heart and mind and creating a visual representation of what I feel the moment the shutter is released.
