MSL's drill will eventually break (though it's not likely to happen within the rover's two-Earth-year, one-Mars-year nominal lifetime). When it does, that will play hell with the rover's electronics.

Umm... but didn't they install a fail-safe to protect the rest of the rover just before liftoff?
+Robert Scott Herrick Apparently the fail safe isn't as safe as they thought.It was obviously not extensively tested until after launch, and the testing has revealed some systems might still be damaged when the drill breaks.
