Took this on my way home the other day.

[ed: this is without filters, and still a pale comparison of what I actually saw. The water was practically purple]

Take a listen to the lucky accident that became the distortion pedal.
“I'm pretty sure what happened was the primary transformer opened up,” says Glen Snoddy, the 91-year-old retired audio engineer who worked on producer Owen Bradley's three-channel recording console in the summer of '60, when the console malfunctioned and caused session great Grady Martin's ...

The vagaries of analog circuitry produced many earlier effects of distortion that predate this by quite a bit so the title of the article is misleading. This specific incident apparently led to the invention of the fuzz box, which was probably the most extreme distortion effect at the time.

How manipulated will you feel now that you know the traditional American bacon and eggs breakfast was invented to increase the sale of pork?

On the other hand, this is a great example of Edward Bernays working outside the boundaries of his defined role to do exactly what the customer needed. This wasn't a traditionally defined ad campaign or marketing campaign. This was Bernays asking 5000 doctors to agree on something, which makes a press event in and of itself. His biggest manipulation was that the doctors happened to pick up on his proffered example of a good breakfast: bacon and eggs.

And also, "Don't get saucy with me, Bernays!"
Bacon for breakfast seems as American as apple pie. And certainly bacon has been a staple to the American diet since the colonial period. Pigs are relatively easy to domesticate, and the brining/sa...

Death is a proto-punk Detroit band that's making the rounds right now. They started out in 1971 as an R&B and then switched to heavy metal after a Alice Cooper concert. Punk is how we'd describe their sound today, but it didn't really exist then. They released a 7", but were probably considered ...

Who doesn't love going here? The parking sucks, but the management is on the up-and-up, the food is good, and the view is incredible. The grass is a little steep, but there's not a bad seat in the house.

An upscale farmers market in a downscale atmosphere. More expensive than Monterey Market (for local and delicious produce) and way more crowded than you'd like. Go to Berkeley West if you can (newer, less crowded, more parking), and get yours staples at Trader Joes. The best thing Berkeley Bowl has for it is the meat and seafood market.

I can't believe parks like this exist. Steam trains, golf course, merry-go-round, hiking, biking, and a petting zoo? It's a jewel.
