Baja 1000

Baja & Sports  -

Ivan "Ironman" Stewart's best of the best video. In the 1973 Ensenada 300 off-road race Ivan Stewart drive his first off-road race substituting for a co-worker that had broken his leg.
He had invited Stewart, then 28, to tag along as co-driver; rookie Stewart went ahead and drove the race himself, pretty much unheard-of at the time.
Even more unheard-of: Stewart won and kept driving solo. A few years later, he finished the Baja 1000 alone, for which he won the first Valvoline Ironman Award, created by the late Mickey Thompson.
More Ironman Awards followed, along with the nickname. Stewart signed with Toyota in 1983, and continues his relationship with the company, one of motorsports’ longest racer-manufacturer connections. Stewart has 84 career wins and 10 drivers’ championships; victories include 17 Baja 500s, three Baja 1000s, and four SCORE world championships.

#Baja1000 race organizer press release excerpt's "With racing continuing for 239 starters at the 48th Baja 1000 desert race until 10:33 p.m. Saturday when the course closes for the car, truck and UTVs, Mexico’s Carlos "Apdaly" Lopez received time penalties from race officials Saturday morning for two course violations, costing him a possible overall and Trophy Truck race victory."

"Lopez, just 20 and one of the talented young guns of the World Desert Championship and winner of this year’s 47th Baja 500 in June, received a total time penalty of 20 minutes for missing two virtual checkpoints. The penalty moved him from an unofficial victory in the iconic race to second place overall and in his class in the legendary Desert Race"

"In explaining this in-progress penalty assessment, Race Director Abelardo Grijalva commented, “Because Apdaly is so popular as a prominent home-country racer we wanted to avoid any confusion among the racers, fans and news media personnel covering this race that his penalty will move him unofficially to second place overall and in Trophy Truck class"

"The results of the complete race will become official Sunday morning after all the data loggers of the vehicles that finished within the time limit are reviewed prior to the race awards"

Off-Road without SCORE at Baja Sur = nice event without all the marketing BS you have thrown at you during their races.
The general opinion is not very friendly to the org (SCORE Intl & owner Richie Rich Roger Norman) after $ hikes to communities, event cancellations (Baja Sur 500) with highly questionable explanations and events with avoidable incidents costing life’s (2016 #Baja500 )
The future of of Baja off-road racing will be mid-term with Mexican orgs. Which is good so, Baja IS Mexico!!

Off-Road Baja 1000 Desert Racing Baja California Peninsula Mexico #2014B1K
Introduction
The Tecate SCORE Baja 1000 is without a doubt a emblematic and important event in Off-Road Motorsports in North America. It has a 44 year history and it's tradition has made Baja California a destination for off-road desert racers and the original finish-line city La Paz, Baja California Sur the off-road capital of the world. Every year this race along with the SCORE San Felipe 250 and the SCORE Baja 500 gathers hundreds of racers from all over the world as well as thousands of spectators that see the race at incredible locations in the states of Baja California and Baja California Sur (if there is a peninsula run race as 2012 again to La Paz)
