Got really excited when I saw this poster because I thought the new season of The Walking Dead was starting early. Still looking forward to August 23rd. #walkingdead

"The Total Money Makeover" by Dave Ramsey offers readers a straightforward step-by-step guide for developing a responsible relationship with personal finances. The book is useful for both people who are already on the right track and those who might be rebuilding after a financial / credit stumble. The book offers prudent advice about achieving financial independence by living debt free and within your means. Ramsey backs up claims with facts and statistics but makes the subject relatable by telling his own story of financial redemption while also sharing the stories of people that have found success with his methods.

Overall I liked the book’s balanced approach to finances. I view being a spendthrift or miser as two sides of the same coin because both are forms of issues with maintaining responsible control of finances. A spendthrift has too little control while a miser is overly controlling but as with most things, the best course is somewhere in the middle. I thought it was pretty cool that Rasmey dedicated most of the end of the book to explaining the importance of having healthy relationship with money. I liked the balanced approach of delaying immediate gratification in the short-term to achieve financial independence in the long-term.

A traditional gyro consists of spit roasted meat served on pita bread with tomatoes and tzatziki sauce. Let me tell you, a good gyro will reassure you that there is good in the world. Moist flavorful meat spiced to perfection on a bed of crisp lettuce with juicy slices of tomato, a generous schmear of tangy refreshing tzatziki sauce all wrapped up in a warm pillowy pita.

Gyros are traditionally made with lamb but can also be made with different types of ground meat or even chicken breasts. I normally order the traditional lamb gyro when I’m out but prefer chicken breast or ground turkey at home. After seeing someone make gyros on tv I realized that the meat is really just a meatloaf and it isn’t absolutely necessary to cook it on a spit. My turkey gyro recipe is pretty much a turkey meatloaf that’s sliced and served with the traditional gyro fixings. I like meatloaf to have a mildly sweet barbecue flavor but you can adjust the seasonings to your liking.

I’d consider myself to be financially literate on a basic to intermediate level as a result of having read several books, magazines, and websites about personal finance. I’ve been looking for books that offer more advanced financial advice specifically for what adults in their 20’s-30’s should be doing to ensure a financially secure future.

However, a problem that I’ve been running into is that a lot of personal finance info focuses on the basics, credit repair, or retirement and are primarily geared towards older folks. I visited the library to browse the personal finance shelves and came across "Your Money and Your Man". In "Your Money and Your Man", financial writer and television show host Michelle Singletary offers women financial advice for dating / courtship, marriage, and raising kids.

Singletary’s writing style is relaxed and folksy which actually made the book engaging. "Your Money and Your Man" is a bit basic but I was still able to learn some new things. The book is primarily geared towards women but the advice is also applicable to men. Most of the advice offered is grounded in facts and statistics are provided to back up claims. While some of the advice is based on Singletary’s personal beliefs, some of them made me revisit my beliefs and it was easy enough to ignore the others. The advice offered won’t apply to everyone but it’s helpful to know what the different options are and how to select the right one(s) for you.

My French toast recipe originally consisted of quickly dipping slices of regular bread in eggs beaten with cinnamon and sugar. I don’t know where I first learned this method but I’d been using it since I was a kid. However, I began using thicker slices of bread to avoid what I consider “dreaded eggy middle” and switched to a custard of sorts after I saw Martha Stewart make French toast. Thus challah French toast was born.

This is my current basic challah French toast recipe. I hope you enjoy it. I don’t generally care for syrup on my French toast (or waffles or pancakes) but a bit of fruit, fruit syrup, and/or whipped cream are nice touches.

#Bessie is a 2015 #HBO film starring #QueenLatifah in an excellent portrayal of 1920’s blues legend Bessie Smith. The film also features a solid star supporting cast masterfully portraying a collection of interesting characters. The movie primarily covers Bessie’s rise, fall, and comeback during the 20’s – 30’s with brief peeks back into her childhood. Bessie is quite good due to the great performances and cinematography but the story itself felt a bit lacking.

I recommend checking out Bessie if you’re into music, a fan of any of the actors, or you’re just looking for a good movie to watch.

Now just to perfect my recipe for fried rice.
Guys. We've FINALLY got a recipe for traditional takeout fried chicken wings. This recipe is an oldie but a goodie--straight out of the archives from way back when Bill's parents owned their Chinese restaurant, Sun Hing. These wings are legit. Fry them, douse them in hot sauce, add whatever accompaniments you will, but serious wing love is assured.

I was going through a folder of photos I’d transferred from my camera and found some photos from 2014 that I never got around to posting. These photos are from my visit to the 2014 New York Auto Show which was held at the Jacob Javits Center. The 2015 car show starts next week but I don’t think I’ll be able to attend.
