When someone visits from overseas and brings a New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc... what do you do?

a) Get excited; it's something new to try! And New Zealand Sauvignon Blancs have a good name, after all.
b) Gasp in horror. How dare they bring a Sauvignon Blanc from another country into my home.
c) Rush to the wine rack to choose a South African Sauvignon Blanc to open and do a taste-comparison.
d) Something else. (Tell us what!)

Just look at them; aren’t they lovely? 😉

Our splendid judges are slaving away - last day! - sniffing and tasting and scribbling notes as they wade through this year’s entries in the 2018 #FNBTop10 competition.

Which Sauvignon Blancs will make it? We’re eager to find out. You, too? Well, hang about on to the edge of your seats for a bit longer... enjoy the anticipation!

Locals usually know best. Some more than others. Not only a maker of excellent wines, Pierre of Giant Periwinkle Wines has a few tricks up his sleeve when it comes to diving for and preparing fresh seafood and pairing it with Sauvignon Blanc along the shores of South Africa. Here is one of his splendid tricks that leaves you wondering ‘Why didn’t I think of that?’...
Pickled Alikreukel (otherwise known as Giant Periwinkles)
WINE PAIRING: GIANT PERIWINKLE’S SOUTH CAPE WHITE (SAUVIGNON BLANC/SEMILLON BLEND)
Directions:
1 Boil Alikreukel (a.k.a. Giant Periwinkles) until they are loose in their shells, approx. 15 to 20 minutes.
2 Shake them from their shells and rinse in clean water.
3 Remove and discard the intestine from the muscular “foot” of the Giant Periwinkle, and thinly slice the meat that’s left.
4 Pickle them for two days in the brine from a jar of a very famous pickled onion brand – you know which. Pierre suggests getting the strong one.
5 Enjoy with some cheddar cheese and savoury biscuits.
P.S. He shared two more recipes which we put on our blog. Link in our bio!

Our judges have been BUSY. This is what awaited them on Day 1 of judging the FNB Sauvignon Blanc Top 10 competition earlier this week. Not that they could see, of course. #blindtasting

Yes. It really is that time of year again. Hope you got your Sauvignon Blanc entered! And if you did, we wish you the very best!

Visit SA Winelands recently shared a fascinating piece of history:

Did you know the first farm in the Cape was granted to a woman? She was, however, no ordinary 17th century woman. The tale of Catharina Ras is the stuff that legend and folklore are made of. Read more on the blog: https://www.visitwinelands.co.za/blog/2018/the-tale-of-catharina-of-the-cape

Small-scale wines with a big heart and even bigger name. Pierre Rabie, wine maker and co-owner of Giant Periwinkle wines, has a great love for Sauvignon Blanc, and regularly has us drooling over his food pairing ideas on Twitter, so we were pleased when he agreed to share three very simple but mouthwatering recipes to pair with three of his Sauvignon Blancs, which – as an appreciator of the cultivar – we recommend you get your hands on, either directly or at the Wine Village in Hermanus.
And for the recipes, pop over to our blog! The link is in our bio. :)

Southern Vines does a marvelous job of highlighting where to enjoy a #vegan meal in #capetown.
"The Radisson blu Waterfront cape town, one of the most iconic hotels in Cape Town, has introduced a vegan set menu at Tobago’s Restaurant...
With the Atlantic Ocean at your table’s edge on the Terrace, there’s no better place to enjoy your vegan meal."
