Imagine RIT is designed to demonstrate what can be accomplished when, as RIT President Bill Destler likes to say, “the right and left brain collide.” Visitors have witnessed a robot that serves hot dogs, a concrete canoe that floats and dozens of musical and theatrical performances. Children have made freeze-dried ice cream, test driven Segways and jumped around in a bounce house.

The Herbert W. Vanden Brul Entrepreneurial Award was created in 1984 through an endowment fund established by Mr. Vanden Brul in Conjunction with RIT’s Saunders College of Business. The award is presented annually to an individual or business that has improved the economic life of greater Rochester of whose innovative management skills have changed the course of an existing business. The award recipient is selected by a committee of area civic and business leader and RIT faculty. Saunders College is excited that the Herbert W. Vanden Brul Award symbolizes the links that join RIT and the Rochester Business community.

Although RIT has a great programs within the College of Business, the advisement department brings it down on so many levels. I'm sure not all advisors are bad but the experience with mine has left a sour taste in my mouth. He/she was not helpful and tried to brush me off. When I did have questions, the advisor jumped to conclusions and made simple questions 10000x more difficult than ever needed to be. While I may say that I was not put in the easiest of situations and I was not the ideal student to work with, he/she did not make it any easier or pleasant. Instead they acted as if it was a personal attack on them and quickly escalated simple questions. Not only that, but on several occasions (not just from my own experience) advisors lacked to give proper advisement and overlooked information that would cause students to spend extra time at RIT and waste thousands upon thousands of dollars. Yes, there are a lot of students at RIT, but advisors have a job to do and from experience it is not being done satisfactorily. Given the recent turnover in faculty, hopefully they can set a better tone from the top, down.
