Is it prudent to block CTAs on your site? Good business sense?

(Waking up the post from +Carol Lynn Rivera)

Disclaimer: I am founder and CEO of RiteKit, which includes Rite.ly, a social CTA tool.

I suggest that those who take the position that my CTA on my social shares of their blog constitutes hijacking or theft should consider a few things:

My Tweet (or other social share) of your blog contains a promise. The Tweet contains text and a URL. In the text, I publicly promise that what you get by clicking the URL is what is in the text.

Is it, though...? Most bloggers are powering their sales funnel from that blog. I thus am blocked from reading the blog article, first by your splash page. I close that and read. Yes, I saw the newsletter subscription widget on the right, and I'll probably subscribe - if you'd kindly let me read that one post. But you do not. A minute into reading and up you pop again, funnelling me again.

When I try to close the tab, I now get a Let's keep in touch exit popup.

Fellow bloggers, I get it: you put a hell of a lot of time into that article and you need to pay for goods and services. Life. And thus, all of this poppin' and lockin' has become de riguer. Your competitors do it so, you're just keeping up.

And you are also making me a bit of a liar when I share your blog. You are click-baiting 'n persistently conversion funnelling from the header to the splash to the parade of popups that I will inflict upon my followers, should I share your blog.

I share your blog, though, and your free Twitter bot service clogs my mentions column in Tweetdeck with one of those oh-so-2010 automated "Thank you for being one of my top yada-yada's..."

You know what? I just shared your blog article to 27,000 followers and actually, beyond them, since my Tweets come up in social search, they are curated and republished and for others, some of whom do not follow me - those looking at the 1,870 Twitter lists @osakasaul is on.

When I add my CTA, I do not affect your site.

I use rite.ly to iFrame and share my own iFrame tinyURL of your site, and do so to my followers. I have affected your site in no way. You don't ask permission to treat your reader to an onslaught of pushy popups; I'm not asking permission for what I do - in that which is limited to my social sharing of your content. Like your popups, there's an X to break iFrames; click that X and it's gone.
Try that with https://twitter.com/RiteTag/status/785848328844087299 - click the rite.ly URL, which I set up with a 4-second delay and slight opacity.

Now, I could share your most worthwhile blog article, and I want to, since I agree with a lot of it and it has great take-aways for my followers. It's so good that I'll suck it up, in regards to your barrage of popups. But when you have proactively block me from getting anything for myself, your blog qualifies for my no-share list.

Is it prudent to block CTAs on your site? Good business sense?

If it was, why do most sites not do so, including:

Buffer Blog - http://rite.ly/jbog
Inbound.org - http://rite.ly/jnIJ
The Next Web
Social Media Examiner
Marketingland
Mashable
Venture Beat
TechCrunch
Huffington Post
ProBlogger
Entrepreneur
Content Marketing Institute
any many more

Here's my 90-second video on how I check if you're a blogger who likes to take but doesn't like to give - How to check with RiteForge whether a site will allow rite.ly (or any) CTA: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZJ19ywu8m20

Just me or, does this hark to anyone else of the current AdBlock battle ?

Fellow bloggers, we all need to make a buck. You funnel with your blog; please consider keeping your blog share-friendly. This is not limited to share-friendly buttons that scroll with me as I read. It also includes allowing those who introduce you to their audiences to get something for themselves.

Today thanks to +Ian Anderson Gray I learned about a service riding on the coattails of content curation that really incited a meltdown. After the meltdown I sat on it and thought about it rationally for a while and went through pros and cons and tried to be fair. And then I had another meltdown. So basically I'm a puddle of lava on the floor right now, thanks Ian!

Anyway, I want to share this because it's worth opening a dialogue and I'd love to hear your thoughts on this.

The service I just learned about is called snip.ly and the premise is simple. You create a floating ad with your photo, your message and a link to your website, signup button for your email list, or a link to your free download - and then you put it on someone else's site without their knowledge, approval or permission.

Want to see it in action? Visit this link... with fair warning to +Ryan Hanley

http://snip.ly/P65a

So the next time you curate something, you can rather easily place your offer over the curated content. Sharing a +Forbes article? No problem. Throw on a floating box with a signup for your email list. Sharing a +Copyblogger article? Fantastic, let people download your ebook right from their page! Sharing a Web.Search.Social article? Oh, HELL NO. Don't even go there right now, because I'm not sure what happens when lava melts down.

You may have discerned my opinion on the matter. Now you tell me.

** Is it ok to put your message, face, download, email signup on someone else's site, which they have no control over?

** Is it ok to do it in a way that makes this transparent to the reader, who has no clear way of knowing that they're signing up for/downloading/visiting a completely unrelated entity?

** Am I just overreacting?

I came across the attached article today because after I'd heard and learned more about this service I immediately went to work finding a way to block it from being used on my site. And karma came through because I found +Jonathan Bailey's  amazing article on the subject. Jonathan is a plagiarism expert and he brings up not only some ethical questions but some legal ones that are worth taking a look at.

He also shares some ways of blocking this from being used on your site. I can tell you at least one person who I know is going to be doing some programming. (I'm looking at you, +Ralph M. Rivera)

Share your thoughts with me on this - would you use this service? Do you want someone else using it on your site?

In the words of +Jason T. Wiser ... "What, are you kidding me?"

And do me a favor and share Jonathan's article with every content creator you know.

Would love a few other specific people in on this conversation including those I've already mentioned. What say you +Dino Dogan  +Alisa Meredith +Mike Allton +Colleen Conger +Melanie Kissell +Pam Aungst +Ian Cleary +Patrick O'Keefe +Brooke B. Sellas and anyone who feels like chiming in!

PS: If you comment on this let me know if I can use your comments in the article you KNOW I'm writing about this next week.
A new service, Snip.ly, makes it easy for anyone to put their ad on your site, or almost any other site on the Web. Fortunately, there are ways to block it.

This is the video CTA that I made to show what rite.ly does. A CTA is like an ad that goes out on pages you share to social - everywhere: Google+, Twitter, Tumblr, LinkedIn, Pinterest, Facebook. Really: everywhere.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=27OM7gCDddc

Your social need not sell, it should make the phone ring, though. Do that with a text banner, image button or banner or customizable video call-to-action from rite.ly. This is all of $15/month after a free trial.
See it in action by clicking the rite.ly URL in https://twitter.com/osakasaul/status/794785826152546304

There's lots more that can be done, like doing a CTA for each of your clients, replacing the rite.ly URL with your own tinyURL or doing that by default and then, for some clients, using their own domain for the rite.ly URL.

Need a hand? I'm glad to help.

The line between invincible and failure is awfully thin

It gets better with time and with team; in time your business' value proposition and your own follow-through will earn you staff or team members, as I think of them, who you know will continue to make breakthroughs that will propel you onward, and this knowledge is how you weather the scary times.

5 Things to Learn When You Start a New Business
(http://gplnk.co/2bCT9LY)

When beginning a new #business venture, it can be easy to get caught up in all the stresses that line your journey to self-actualization. However, there are many wonderful things to learn along the way that only come through a determination distinct to positions which call for a higher amount of dedication.

Think of parents, students, teachers, doctors, nurses, etc.,

My personal favourite lesson to learn:
Life seems to have a deeper meaning now.

Much like parenting, you start to realize that everything you experience is to prepare you for your stewardship and that it is all a gift to help those who depend on you.

What better lesson is there than to be taught that we matter?

I work in a startup. I do more real work than I CEO. Specifically, I am a lean startup product designer, versed in business development, marketing, web tool feature design, community development, PR, and talent attraction, and the only Saul Fleischman most people ever meet.
Introduction

Lean startup product and service designer, talent magnet. Experienced in user experience, community development, PR, business modelling and turning nothing into something.

Current Projects:

  • RiteKit is a social media optimization service for  anyone who needs to engage more closely with and reach beyond their followers.  Just one feature in RiteForge, Composer, provides three ways to get hashtag suggestions, tag a post, and send or schedule to Twitter and/or Facebook - with time optimization as well. RiteTag Analytics offers downloadable reports, and also leads the user to his hardest working tags in the user's Optimizer.
  • IdeasWatch: "Startup inspiration from the crowd."  This is our best example of a CrowdGene-powered community site.  If you need your own private social network, look at the functionality of IdeasWatch and contact me with your wish-list of how we could build something similar to suit your organization's needs.

I conceive and bootstrap social media tools into existence.  For lean startups, I am your product and service designer, also versed in team-building and project management, as well as UX, functionality, business modeling, monetization, marketing and PR.

Bragging rights
I build distributed startup teams with people who never cease to amaze me.
