Minified Haar and LBP cascades

Usually, we do not care about the file sizes of our trained machine learning models. However, if you are working on a mobile application, you don't want to load large model files if you don't have to. Today I am sharing a post on how to minimize the sizes of OpenCV Haar and LBP cascades by almost 50%. I am also sharing the minified XML files that are licensed under the same terms as OpenCV's cascades.

Actually, we recently had to train our own eye detector because the one that comes with OpenCV did not do well for a client. They were getting 85% detection ( with a very high false positive rate ). The detector we trained for them had > 99% detection and 0 false positives ( at least on the test set they were using ). Like I said before, sometimes these methods come in handy for specific problems and the real world is full of such problems.

Image Recognition and Object Detection : Part 1

I am writing a series of posts on Image Recognition and Object Detection starting with traditional Computer Vision techniques. Follow-up posts will cover Deep Learning based techniques. I hope you find this post useful.

Received some very nice emails in response to my Deep Learning book gift announcement.

The most inspiring story was that of 9-year-old Arantxa and her father Jose who teach people how to build robots. Their robots are Printbots; these robots can be built using printed 3D parts.

Arantxa is also a TEDxYouth (Madrid) speaker and is an inspiration to all girls interested in math, science, robotics and AI.

The full list of gift recipients is on my blog
