I was just reading about this. I don't have full access to Nature, so I was only able to see what others have said about it. There was one line in the article I read that bothered me: "The 10 billion light year distance gave the researchers a chance to view cosmic radiation on a very large scale, allowing them to detect a gas cloud much larger than galaxy, with a gas filament of the cosmic web as the only logical conclusion." In a Universe we are only just beginning to understand, why is conclusion dubbed the only logical one? I'm not a cosmologist or an astronomer, but I'd love to hear from one. Isn't it possible this is something else? At least possible? Or is a cosmic gas filament truly the only possible explanation?
