India's Daughters documentary, in my point of view, has covered well; accounting for all point of views: the perpetrators, victims', victim's parents’, law makers, lawyers, police, perpetrator’s families and background, etc.
Accounting for all point of views, especially via video interviews, means that the journalist has gathered (more than tell) the story as it happened and presents it to one's viewers; this is what journalists do or ought to do, i.e. telling the truth. In my opinion, that’s exactly what BBC and Leslee Udwin did; in the larger context of improving societies, who said the truth, but the focus of the truth itself, is irrelevant. I do not think, and perhaps most may agree on this, that BBC did not pay any of interviewees to speak contrary to their opinions or viewpoints.
The Delhi rape victims’ ordeal and views captured in the documentary were not fictional, but are a reality. It is my view that India is a very patriarchal society; the term 'very patriarchal' is a shift from much needed balanced center, this should be enough to trigger a discussion anywhere and everywhere to bring about action to tightly straddle around the balanced center of sexes’ influence/treatment in our respective societies.
Part of the problem, I think, is you and I; yes, you and I. We don’t talk or do enough. It’s easy for us to shove such matters that call for our thinking brain and followed action under the rug, because when it’s right in front our eyes staring at us and begging for our action, we can’t stand it.
What I felt very disappointed about the activities following airing of the documentary is that rather than it triggering a much needed national debate, the immediate reaction in India and nationalists was of shoving under the rug of activities: it’s about defaming India by Mr. Venkaiah Naidu (Minister of Urban Development of India), the documentary gives platform to the perpetrators and misogynists, etc. The latter list of activities, i.e. shoving under the rug of activities, is consequential side effect when we do not take actions to improve our societies, and not the other way round.
Although, violence and ill treatment of women happens in India, it is not specific to India alone, so I think there is no need for unnecessary nationalism shooting down much need debate and follow on action. Since the Rwandan genocide, ‘rape on women’ has been used as a weapon of war, destroying families (http://goo.gl/ZuAtH). "No development is possible without changing mentalities in a society which has lost all values," said doctor and Sakharov laureate Denis Mukwege during his visit to the European Parliament yesterday; see video here: http://goo.gl/B9C0wE. In his statement, Dr. Denis Mukwege, said ‘changing mentalities in a society’, he did not say ‘changing mentalities in DR Congo’. Unnecessary nationalism cripples needed debate and action; I urge you instead to act upon through the act of compassion to fellow living being (not just humans); for nations, like money, are mere ideas to solve complexity in life for survival.
I believe that we should initiate discussions and debates on how we treat others right around us to begin with; a conversion anywhere and everywhere in our households, among friends, among colleagues, public places, etc. should happen. I think, among these discussions we should allow for all views including those that may be of misogynist in nature, all ideas should be challenged in the interest of and to bring about change towards a better world; the focus then may become about building a better world and not about whose views should prevail and to be judged upon I think.
