The Immigration Department has been forced to pay at least $10,000 compensation to lawyers who were denied access to a compound at the Christmas Island detention centre, after the Victorian Supreme Court found staff at the centre had behaved in a "high-handed" manner, with an "unacceptable disregard" for the rule of law.

Sarah Whyte is a Walkley Award winning journalist who is currently the Immigration reporter for the Sydney Morning Herald and The Age in Fairfax's federal politics bureau in Canberra. She was previously the Consumer Affairs reporter where she wrote consumer investigations about global supply chains,environmentalism, ethical food production and retail. In this round Sarah won a Walkley Award for Social Equity in 2013. Sarah has also covered the music round and general news and has written the occasional personal column and long form features.
