As much as I appreciated the song #samelove when it first came about and the role it has inevitably played in "mainstreaming" the idea of the universality of the romantic experience...the song started annoying me a while ago. Maybe it was the copious airplay it got, maybe it was the excessive hype and redundant awards it received, but the focus on a song openly supported legalizing same-sex marriage (something I'm obviously a HUGE fan of) seems to have become more about the song itself than the message. My admiration for the song was officially "over" when I saw the Grammy Marriage-Pallooza that featured special performances by Queen Latifa, Madonna, and, of course, That Lesbian Who Sings With Macklemore Sometimes. Oh, and some people getting married.
The whole thing was supposed to be a celebration of marriage, but the couples seemed like accessories to Macklemore's Grammy performance. It was just gimmicky and weird. I don't know about you, but I would NEVER get married at some other guy's concert, or with another couple, let alone 30 other couples. The whole thing left me wondering if they paid the couples as much as they paid the back-up dancers/singers in other Grammy performances.
I appreciate the song and all , and did through their very special song. But the shine is starting to wear off, and I'm ready to move on.
