Ask HN: The “I want to do everything but end up doing nothing” dilemma. 20 points by goralph 47 minutes ago | discuss. I've had a problem for more than a year now and I seem to be coming to grips with it as of late. As a CS student / junior engineer there is an absolute abundance of subjects ...

To implement a distributed lock, you need a distributed hashtable. To implement a distributed hashtable, you need a distributed lock.

Is there a good tutorial/writeup/blogseries/book on how to write (design/code/etc.) applications on top of OpenStack ?

I have heard from multiple people at various instances that the design of your applications needs to change if it is running on openstack (than a public cloud or on a local machine). I have no experience setting up openstack or writing apps. on top of it. So wanted to know if there is some such good design patterns that I need to follow before I embark on writing an app that will be deployed on top of openstack.

A new course on Cloud Computing by the university of Illinois begins on the Coursera in a few days. I have registered. If you are interested in learning the nuts and bolts of distributed systems (paxos, raft, distributed consensus etc.), it may interest you.

Note that it may not help at all if you want to just use the cloud.

In case you are participating from Bangalore, I would love to work with you for discussions and co-implementing the coursework programs :-)

Cloud Computing Concepts is a free online class taught by Indranil Gupta of University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign

Does any of the mariadb backends support row-level read locking ? What I mean is:

I have an application that may run on three or four different machines. The number of machines is dynamic and not with fixed addresses. The application will execute the following two queries:

```
SELECT col3 from table1 WHERE col1=X
<do some checking with the version>
UPDATE table1 SET col2 = somevalue, col3 = somevalue WHERE col1=X
```

Now, between the first SELECT query and the second UPDATE query, I do not want any instance of the application to even read (not just WRITE) the record(s) corresponding to col1=X

Is it possible to achieve in mysql / mariadb ?

Writing code/design for a map-reduce library feels like intentionally inferior programmatically, from a naive newbie perspective.

Do you use a laptop (or read) regularly in night times in your bed ? Get a study lamp. It is unbelievably comfortable. Very strongly recommended. I may never be able to work with room lights on here after.

I too use[d] the thinkpad's light but the light source hits your eye and puts some strain on your eyes. The dedicated study lamp puts the light on the keyboard without the source falling in your eye. So your eyes feel a lot relaxed. I expected it to be better but I never assumed that it would be so better. Kindle paperwhite also uses a similar lighting principle iirc.

The world still lacks a Project Management system that can properly integrate git (or any VCS), bugs, tasks, wiki.

gitorious seem to be not progressing. gitlab lacks tasks and integration of tasks/bugs with commit messages. None of the systems have a decent code review system (without pull-requests for a RFC kind of thing).

Sadly all the FOSS projects (from Google to MSFT) are all moving to the proprietary github system.
