Abandoned
After a long time, had a walk through the marine drive walkway in Kochi couple of months back. At one of its section, I noticed a pair of dilapidated boats tied to the poles. It looked an interesting subject but it was very dark and was wondering how to photograph it. Then thought of experimenting with long exposure. Since I didn’t have a tripod at that time, placed the camera on a stable surface and went for 30s long exposure. I have to admit that the result was beyond my expectation. Can anyone guess which part of marine drive you can see this?

Creative photography by long exposure was always a challenge with my S2 IS. The maximum duration available was only 15s and with the small sensor, noise also was high. The #Sony #a6000 offers shutter speeds between 1/4000 and 30 seconds with a Bulb option. Hopefully this will help me in creating some creative low light photography that I had visualized.

As many of you might know, I have been using a P&S camera for past 9 years.  I am planning to buy an SLR camera now.  So I’m looking for some valuable suggestions from all of you.

Since I don’t have any lenses with me, I now have flexibility to choose any brand whether it is Nikon, Canon or any others.   Here are few criteria for the selection
• I am not looking at an entry level SLR but an advanced amateur one.
• Cropped sensor body
• Photography style is mostly nature & landscape
• Budget depends on the above criteria

I’m also interested in mirrorless cameras from Sony.  Should I go for this instead of a DSLR?  I understand the shortage of lenses as of now but won’t it improve?

Anything else I should look into?  Thanks in advance!

Bokeh
In photography, bokeh is the blur, or the aesthetic quality of the blur, in out-of-focus areas of an image. Bokeh has been defined as "the way the lens renders out-of-focus points of light". The term comes from the Japanese word boke, which means "blur" or "haze.

To achieve bokeh in your images, you need to shoot with lens wide open (aperture of f/2.8, f3.5). You can also acheive this by using a long lens and by increasing the distance between the background and your subject.

After Sunset
Rightly called the ‘golden hour of photography’, dusk allows some breathtaking imagery. As the sun dips the horizon, it produces a stunning skyscape that can produce beautiful images. For an hour before and after sunset, the skies display a vivid sequence of colors, converting everything else into silhouettes of basic shapes and forms. This was captured after sunset at the Fort Kochi beach in Kerala.

Back Again!
It’s been a long hiatus from G+ due to multitude of reasons. After the annual butterfly migration survey at Aralam WLS in January this year, my camera got damaged. Getting it repaired took few months. After that I was busy both professionally & personally because of which photography took back seat. Hopefully I’ll be back to full flow as the waterfall here :). I would like to take a moment to thank all my well-wishers who enquired about the lack of posts and my well-being during this period. Really appreciate your messages.

Around two years back I had posted on driving through the Idukki high ranges during a rainy season. This one is captured during a similar drive this year. It was also the time to experiment with my new 8-stop ND filter.

Introduction
I love any media where one can express their creativity. Photography has always interested me but couldn’t pursue it as a hobby because of the expense involved in film photography. I finally ventured into the world of photography after I bought my P&S digital camera, Canon PowerShot S2 IS in January 2006. I would like to take this moment to thank the people behind the digital photography revolution. I cannot imagine photography reaching the masses, as it has done now, without the advent of digital photography.

Wading gingerly at first, I soon delved into the deep waters of photography after joining Flickr on September 2006. It’s been an exhilarating journey since then, learning the nitty-gritty of photography. I love to photography anything and everything. But looking back at the photos I have taken, I consider myself as a nature and landscape photographer.

My first visit to a butterfly park was to the Bannerghatta butterfly park in Bangalore. I was initially impressed by the setup over there but during later visits was disillusioned as the species we see remained the same. Around that time, I started hearing about the Sammilan Shetty butterfly park and started seeing photos of some variety species of butterflies. I immediately started planning for a visit to the park and was waiting for an opportunity. The wait finally culminated with a visit to the park in November 2014. What impressed me at first sight were the thick vegetation and the absence of man-made structures inside the park. According to me, providing a natural environment for the butterflies is utmost important and which was lacking at Bannerghatta. Well, the species of butterflies sighted in the park is enormous. Though it may vary with season, a sighting is guaranteed. Wherever you turn you can sight a butterfly. The park is not only about butterflies, you can find a variety of insects and for a macro photographer this is a dream destination. An early visit to the park will treat you to a variety of birds as well. Another experience you’ll never forget is the hospitality of Sammilan and his family. Right from the moment we land there and until we leave they take care of us really well. Sammilan’s commitment to the park and how he maintains it is really commendable. Not many people can do this. My only suggestion to him is to leave the natural environment as it is. Do not try to build pathways so that visitors can walk easily. Let the terrain remain uneven, let the shrubs and bushes remain thick and let the grasses grow! I visited the park this year too and I guess I’ll continue doing it. So Sammilan, you can expect me every year at your park and all the best wishes for this excellent venture!
