Phish Awareness - Don’t Get Hooked
imagePhishing refers to the use of fraudulent messages by scammers to try to steal sensitive information, such as credit card numbers or passwords, or to install malicious software, or "malware," on a user's computer. Phishers often use a combination of e-mail, text messages, and fake websites to try to deceive their victims. They are creative, and ruthless. That's why you've got to be suspicious of any e-mail that looks even a little bit unusual.
Protecting yourself from phishing isn't that complicated. Knowing what to look for and what action to take can stop phishing attempts before they do damage.

Here are some standard practices you can implement to help avoid phishing scams:
Be cautious about using the links in e-mails, instant message, or chat. If you suspect that the message you received is not authentic or if you don’t know the sender, do not use the links in the e-mail. Instead, call the company.
Think before clicking, and examine the address bar in your browser. Never click a link that looks suspicious. Hover over or long tap a link to display the true URL and see if it is linking to a reputable website, or instead of clicking, type website addresses in your browser to access sites directly.
Double-check the security of any website you use before you supply information. Phishers can forge two indicators of a secure site: the https:// and the yellow lock. Instead of using the provided link, always type the web address of your financial institution directly into your browser. To test the security lock, double-click the lock to display the security certificate for the site. If any type of warning displays, such as "the address of the site does not match the certificate," do not continue.
Be skeptical of messages that require "immediate action" or threaten that you will lose something. Do not open attachments you aren’t expecting – especially ZIP files – and NEVER run .exe files.
Log on regularly to your online accounts. Make it a habit to log on regularly and check your accounts to verify that all transactions are legitimate.
Use common sense. If it looks like spam, then it probably is spam.
