I like this photo. It was taken, if I'm not mistaken, while rehearsing a scene where Alan clipped me and Rupert round the back of a head with a book. We all, apparently, found this hard to do without laughing.

Years ago when I taught in a middle school, all grades - 6, 7, and 8 - had a full 45 minute lunch period. Half of that was spent eating, and the other half was spent outside. It was wonderful! Over time the lunch period was reduced to 25 or 30 minutes of just eating. No more "free play" as we called it. I was disappointed for the kids, and I saw a change in their ability to "keep it together" and attend to learning in the afternoons. Education as a whole needs to be more in line with what kids really need.
Go to a skate park and you'll see just how necessary movement is for 12-14 year olds. I'm writing this post during recess. It's not really recess. It's lunchtime. However, for this half an hour, students have a break. They can move. They can play. They can socialize. They can be free.

We have the same set up at our middle schools. The down side is that students who are pretty well behaved in the morning, suddenly have behavior issues in the afternoon. It's not just ADD/ADHD or boys. They have no time to move, work out their social issues, take a brain break before getting back to work.

Alan Rickman is undoubtedly one of the greatest actors I will ever work with. He is also, one of the loyalest and most supportive people I've ever met in the film industry. He was so encouraging of me both on set and in the years post-Potter. I'm pretty sure he came and saw everything I ever did on stage both in London and New York. He didn't have to do that. I know other people who've been friends with him for much much longer than I have and they all say "if you call Alan, it doesn't matter where in the world he is or how busy he is with what he's doing, he'll get back to you within a day".

People create perceptions of actors based on the parts they played so it might surprise some people to learn that contrary to some of the sterner(or downright scary) characters he played, Alan was extremely kind, generous, self-deprecating and funny. And certain things obviously became even funnier when delivered in his unmistakable double-bass.

As an actor he was one of the first of the adults on Potter to treat me like a peer rather than a child. Working with him at such a formative age was incredibly important and I will carry the lessons he taught me for the rest of my life and career. Film sets and theatre stages are all far poorer for the loss of this great actor and man.

Congratulations, John! We need more folks from the classroom in higher ed for the good of our future teachers and their students. Excited to follow your journey!

Hi Sandy,

This is Mary from DialMyCalls.

I wanted to followup on my last email. We, at DialMyCalls, love your site and were wondering if you offer any kind of advertising options. Possibly sponsored posts or banner ads.
Thousands of teachers are already using our DialMyCalls service.
We think DialMyCalls would be the perfect match with your audience. We could even give away our service for free if you wanted to run some kind of promotion or giveaway.

Either way we are up for anything you have available, please let me know.

I look forward to hearing back from you,
Mary
