A little more about what I hope to achieve:
#iArtMe - Life through my filter
Samantha Laura Kaye#iArtMe
is an exhibition exploring the personal and public through digital mobile photography.
Taking popular themes and playing with “insta-art-memes”; such as #feet, #food, #selfies and #material-love, Kaye document her personal experience and her world through her filter by utilising images taken and edited only on mobile devices and printing them on a variety of mediums to take them out of their digital context and celebrating reel-life in a digital age.
When discussing her process Kaye is quick to defend the belittlement of the insta-art culture that has become prominent in recent years. As early as 1917, the artist Marcel Duchamp broke the insta-art barrier when he exhibited Fountain at the Society of Independent Artist’s exhibition.
Modern society expresses disdain for a seemingly endless stream of instant and arguably thoughtless lunch photos. It can be argued that these images are too accessible, that anyone can take them, that there is no skill involved.
This again however is nothing new, in Andy Warhol’s endless replicas of Campbell Soup Cans, or of Marilyn Monroe’s face, he was encouraging his audience to question mass replication and consumerism. Warhol employed a team to carry out his silk-screens and assist with the “manufacturing” of his work.
As such, recent media is only following trend, President selfies therefore shouldn’t really be met with shock; quite simply tiresome consumerism still seems to dictate our everyday lives. The difference is that now as we collect followers and networks become so huge the issue of access and accountability is met with the issue of responsibility- if we can connect in a more personal capacity within such a public realm.
How much can the personal self: consume, document, filter and share within a shrinking public space in a genuinely unique manner?#iArtMe
plays with this reality, and Kaye seeks to reminds us that behind every filter is an individual me appreciating life! Kaye has utilized a variety of mediums and printing styles – all of which have been facilitated by MyCamera.co.za
to display digital art in a more traditional context and to try to make the viewer think beyond the digital capabilities of their own snaps and experiences.
To join this appreciation Kaye invites you to participate by snapping your own images in the exhibition space – editing and shooting only with your mobile device. All submissions should include the hashtag: #iArtMe
