New on the website today. A variation on the classic Milgram experiment that should fill you with hope and push you to be a better person.

Quick post on SamSpurlin.com about using some sort of task as a warm-up that eases you into the more difficult work you have to do. What are your methods?

I suck in the afternoon. Here's what I'm doing to try to fix that problem:

Agreed. A 20-25 minute nap is right in my sweet spot.

Here are the highlights of my summer reading. Some productivity, a little irrationality, and a smidge of economic development. How about you?

New on SamSpurlin.com this morning -- highlights from my summer reading. These are the best books I've read over the past couple of months with some things I learned from each. What are the best books you've read recently?

I'm brainstorming one-week self-experiments for myself. What should I add to the list? Do you have personal experience with anything?

Thanks Johanna. That's a good idea. I'll have to think a little bit more about how I can operationalize that into an actual experiment.

Having finished up the semester I'm accepting a handful of new coaching clients to begin working with in the next week or so. I'm raising my prices August 1st and would love to get a few new clients in before that happens. I'm advertising $60 per session on my site right now, but will lower that to $50 per session for anyone who contacts me through Google+.

If you've ever been curious about what working with a personal development coach is like I'm more than happy to chat with you about it. You can read more about it at http://samspurlin.com/coaching or send me an email at samspurlin@gmail.com to get started.

I just launched a free email course that aims to tie concepts in positive psychology to the process of working better. A fresh lesson is delivered to your inbox every other day and covers concepts spanning from flow, mindfulness, craftsmanship, strengths, values, and much more.

Learn more about what I'm striving to do with the course by checking out the latest article on my site: http://samspurlin.com/blog/2013/9/12/the-work-better-email-course

Right now my "main gig" is being a graduate student. Therefore, I wrote down some intentions, goals, and things to remember as I move forward in this role. You may not be a graduate student, but have you ever written a "manifesto" for whatever your main gig is?

+Sam Spurlin  An excellent map. If you follow it even 50 percent, you will go far. For myself, I need to think about hard problems an hour a day. There is a huge payoff to devotion to simply (and not at all simply!) thinking.

I agree that it's difficult to get back into working (in my case, writing) after doing something else, which is why I do other things after I get my writing day in. (That's not an option while you're still in classes.)

The world is fortunate that you are here.

Personal development coaching using the power of positive psychology.
Introduction
I'm a coach that helps people take control of their personal development by creating the life they want.

I'm the head organizer for TEDxClaremontColleges in Claremont, California on September 29th, 2012.

I've been a high school social studies teacher, a college hockey head coach, and a semi-professional blogger. I've just started a master's program in Positive Developmental Psychology at Claremont Graduate University in California.

I've stored my stuff here over the summer months for two years in a row. The guys up front are super helpful and friendly and the facilities are top notch. Very clean, well-lit, and easy to navigate. I don't want to waste time thinking or worrying about storing my stuff and this place does a good job of easing my mind. Will continue using it as long as I have storage needs in this area.

I was very impressed with my stay here. The management was helpful and friendly and the room was very clean. Very impressed by the free breakfast as well. It included eggs, biscuits & gravy, waffles, cereal, oatmeal, bacon -- very impressive for a budget hotel. Will definitely stay here again the next time I'm in Albuquerque.

Excellent place to work if you're an independent worker looking to get out of the house or the café. Be surrounded by people doing interesting work, have access to fast Internet, and an overall conducive environment to doing great work.
