The Guardian has just released a great interactive piece on the NSA spying programs, and what Snowden's leaks really mean for people around the world. If you've been following this issue closely then you probably won't learn anything new, but if you want to get up to speed quickly on what the problems are, and why Snowden's leaks about NSA spying affect you personally, then this is a great way to get the full summary.

A board game based on Settlers of Cataan, only utilizing ant biology and colony dynamics. I would like to make one of these boards...

Interesting interview with Neil Gaiman about libraries. He well articulates the main reason I think that librarians are more important now than ever before - not to find you information where none can be found, but to sort and curate the overwhelming quantity that is available to you.

"We’ve gone from looking at a desert, in which a librarian had to walk into the desert for you and come back with a lump of gold, to a forest, to this huge jungle in which what you want is one apple. And at that point, the librarian can walk into the jungle and come back with the apple."

I don't normally see a lot of funny translations, but this one made me laugh. JJC is a Chinese company that makes cheap camera accessories (pretty good stuff, actually). I like their mis-translation of "innovation" as "innovacation" which actually sounds like a word that would be invented by a productivity expert trying to justify sending engineers on long vacations in order to improve their productivity or something. I'm in need of an Innovacation.

Time lapse video of last night's storm in Boulder. A few minutes after the last sequence ended I was running up Broadway getting pounded by hail. Don't know why I went out to film a storm, but forgot to bring an umbrella.

I don't usually post work stuff, but I'm pretty proud of this big sale of over 5.1MW of solar on 18 schools for Stockton Unified School District in California.

Really liking Forecast.io, an innovative new weather forecasting website from the makers of the ultra-sweet iOS weather app Dark Sky. It uses a great combination of high accuracy data sources (from which you can view the actual raw data), and has very intelligent short-term and long-term forecasting algorithms.

It doesn't cram 100,000 auto-playing ads down your throat (you know who I'm talking about), uses scientifically validated NOAA and related data sources, and it looks beautiful (while still being functional).
