+Sam Levene originated the role of Nathan Detroit in the original Broadway production of Guys & Dolls 65 years ago.

John Chapman, +New York Daily News theatre critic, reviewed the original broadway production on November 25, 1950, stating:

The big trouble with “Guys and Dolls” is that a performance of it lasts only one evening, when it ought to last about a week. The cast of “Guys and Dolls’ is more than good; it is just right; In all departments “Guys and Dolls” is a perfect musical comedy. Under the masterful direction of George S. Kaufman, it is swift, crisp and precise, with not a lagging instant.

The leads include Robert Alda, from the movies, who makes an impressive gambler named Sky Masterson; Isabel Bigley as a sweet little missionary in the Broadway jungles; Vivian Blaine as a marriage-minded club blonde, and Sam Levene, an operator of a floating crap game who is her reluctant swain.

As of today, Queen Elizabeth II is now Britain's longest reigning monarch

62 years ago, my Dad, +Sam Levene and ‪#‎VivianBlaine‬ met ‪#‎QueenElizabeth‬ after a Royal Command Variety Performance of Guys & Dolls, the first UK production of the musical at the London Coliseum,  November 9, 1953.

Sam Levene performed the role of Nathan Detroit and Vivian Blaine the role of Miss Adelaide, recreating their performances from the Original 1950 Broadway Production of Guys & Dolls.

Delighted 1950 Al Hirschfeld drawing with my Dad, +Sam Levene as Nathan Detroit from Original Broadway Production of Guys & Dolls, among 100 Al Hirschfeld's at the New York Historical Society.

Organized by #DavidLeopold , Creative Director #Hirschfeld Foundation, the exhibition celebrates the 100th anniversary of the first Broadway show Hirschfeld ever attended.

Always irreverent, my Dad would wonder why the exhibit doesn't include seven other drawings #AlHirschfeld created featuring #SamLevene from many of his legendary performances, including the original Broadway productions of Three Men On A Horse, Room Service, Margin For Error, The Sunshine Boys, Light Up The Sky.

Without question, my Dad and I would agree Hirschfeld created art, not just caricatures or illustrations.  As David Leopold observes, Al Hirschfeld
was the greatest caricaturist of his age, but he really didn't do caricature; he did characters.

For me, Al Hirschfeld drawings are especially poignant as records of many of my Dad's legendary performances which are just memories to many, most of whom now deceased.

Drawings such as Guys and Dolls and Fiddler on the Roof have never been in the same room before and they will probably never be again, which is true of so much of the works in the exhibition  points out Leopold.

With a few definitive lines and a spare Nina or two,  Hirschfeld drawings with my Father, like so many of his drawings, are recreations of theatrical history,

As David Leopold said: Theater is an ephemeral art; it exists only in the moment and many of the artists that Hirschfeld chronicled are gone. In so many cases, these drawings are the only artifacts of the performance. “They’re the surviving witness.

+Sam Levene was Nathan Detroit, and although my Dad +Sam Levene was not a great singer he was a GREAT ACTOR; you believe every word of Sue Me because he lives it.

Listen to the Cast Album of Guys & Dolls from the Original Broadway Production of Guys & Dolls, and he breaks your heart when Sam Levene tells Vivian Blaine to Sue Me.
