Dear all,
I'm really happy to announce that after careful consideration, I have decided to open source AstroBin.

The source code available at the following BitBucket repository: https://bitbucket.org/siovene/astrobin/src/.

The code is licensed under the Affero General Public License.

I will personally coordinate the efforts of the people willing to contribute. I came to realize that the list of things that need to be done is much larger than what I can do by myself, so it's for the best to put it all in the hands of the community.

The issue list is vast, as it's visible on BitBucket.

Please get in touch if you wish to contribute, and together we can make AstroBin better and better!

Salvatore.

Finally had the time to process this image of Abell 426, the Perseus Galaxy Cluster, that I acquired in collaboration with Samuel Díaz Lopez.

It's a massive collection of data: 43.5 hours, including 15 hours of H-Alpha with 1-hour subs. All data was collected between 20-26 November 2013.

Processing was not very easy, and color calibration was kind of tricky, but in the end I'm pretty satisfied with the result.

You can check out the full resolution on AstroBin: http://astrob.in/66851/
AstroBin is an image hosting website specifically targeted to astrophotographers: it's the first and the last place where you need to upload your astrophotography images. Made by an astrophotographer, for the astrophotographers.

My biggest complaint is that it's 'clunky'. I find it's hard to share the data as it involves using some drop downs. I wish I had a solution for you but I don't :(

Thanks Jose for this cool Wordpress plugin for AstroBin!

For those of you with personal blogs.

I made a simple set of Wordpress plugins, based on the Caldera's Engine, to show Astrobin images on your blog. There is a widget that shows any amount of photos from the user you specify (usually you) on the sidebar, and a shortcode to show a single image on your posts or pages by specifying its image number. The code shows the image marked as final and shows its plate solving if available.

The plugins are released under GNU GPL license.

Now that AstroBin is open source, improving the installation process is paramount. I'm working on integrating Vagrant - http://www.vagrantup.com/ - a great way to encapsulate the whole development environment in an easy to use virtual machine.
The installation process will go from following a long script to a single command!
Track the progress at https://bitbucket.org/siovene/astrobin/issue/256/take-vagrant-into-use and feel free to help or pick up other bugs or features!

Modern Chromium based WebView coming to Android 4.0+ as part of the Crosswalk project!

#Crosswalk [1] has been bringing the Chromium engine to #Android  4.0+ for a while now, enabling standalone web applications in the Play Store with a consistent feature set incl. WebGL, WebAudio etc.

Not only do you get all the great features of #Chrome  on Android but you also get the same good performance and V8 engine.

It also works an the backend for #Cordova  with a sister project [2].

Apart from our good Android support, #Intel  has been working on preparing Crosswalk as the runtime for future Tizen releases, and due to many requests we are now also about to launch a WebView for Android that can be used separately or together with Cordova!

Initial patches has started to land, exposing our internal WebView to every Android developer who needs the features of a modern engine and the performance that Chromium offers!

If you have never heard about Crosswalk before, I suggest you check out the article that I wrote a little while ago:

Al right, almost 10 hours in, and it looks like the upgrade was a success! There are a few minor annoyances left, I guess, and I'll fix them as they show up. Keep reporting problems! :)

A HUUUUGE thank you to Dave of ASPwebhosting.com for providing two extra CPU cores to AstroBin as it was running slower after the migration.

Dave hosts AstroBin for free on his awesome servers, you should really send him a short message to thank him. Without him, I don't know if I could afford the hosting bills!

Please take 10 seconds of your time to write "Thank you!" to Dave:
