The Public Speaking 'Golden Rule'

Imagine the following: you’re sitting at a cafe with a good friend and there is an important topic you want to share with this person. For example, a moment that inspired you, or something that really made you think deeply. How would you start such a conversation? How would you build it up? Would you ask questions in between to make the person you are talking to a little curious? Maybe share the journey you took to your own discovery? How would you get your conversational partner to connect with that which you are sharing? Which words would you choose? What would be the most important message you would wish to convey?

And there it is, the golden rule to public speaking, right there!

No matter how small or large the group, imagine you are talking to one person.

Now I understand that this is much easier said than done, since simply acting like you are talking to one person while talking to 10, 50, 100, 500, 1000 or more can be kind of tricky. Just think of all the inspirational talks, or even the ones that were very content based, what was it about them that connected with you? Often it has to do with the manner in which you felt like someone is talking directly to ‘you’. This can be in the form of a story, in the form of relevance, or in the form of pure fascination, which doesn’t matter as much as the ‘tone’ in which it comes out. The main point being that you are sharing what you feel and experience.

The words you choose, and I will go so far as to say even your own body language, will adjust to the ‘one person’ mindset which will magically change the way people respond to you speaking. Now this approach can be used in public speaking, presentations, storytelling, moderating, hosting or any other form of ‘standing in front of more than one person’ type of situations.

In the last years I have had the privilege of speaking at events, holding workshops, and lecturing to students, and I realised that one thing that helped me connect especially was allowing myself be vulnerable and showing an authentic side of me. This has to do with being incredibly honest of what I am talking about, but also how I feel at that very moment whilst speaking.

It then dawned on me, that is exactly how I am when I am having a coffee at some neighbourhood cafe with a friend just having a heart to heart. It’s the sincerity and openness that allows us to connect, no matter the context or setting.

So how do you prepare for your next public speaking gig or presentation? Invite someone close to you over for coffee and go through the entire thing with them and see how they respond to your story. Let them be the reflection of what is needed to really pass on your message.

  • International association for Medical Education (AMEE)
Consultant for online engagement and member E-Learning Committee, 2014 - present
My work with AMEE started quite sometime ago in early 2005 when I joined the local organising committee for setting up the student task force that would help out during the conference that was then being organised in Amsterdam. We setup the first large scale student taskforce (that has now become the student hospitality crew or medical students for conferences - nice to see how that evolved). The next 2 years I took part of the team that coordinated the team of students and help organise things from the location the event was being held. The following 2 years I became a helper for the AMEE staff, being an assistant for several different things as well as taking the responsibility of the social media under my wing. I then took a 3 year break and as of the summer of 2013 I am now back in action with AMEE and their staff as a consultant for their online activity as well as the e-learning committee. What I love about AMEE comes down to a few aspects. My passion for Medical Education really kicked off since attending the first conference in 2005. Ever since i've been unable to shake it off. What I also love about AMEE is the staff that organises it. Its because of them I have been able to remain active and because of them that I always feel welcome when I come to help them out during the annual conference. The trust they have in me only motivates me more to the best I can for the conference. In the mean time I have been hold several of my own conference and pre conference workshops, held presentations and been a part of several sessions as a chair or other form. I was also able to present my own research as a short communication.
  • Medisch centrum Leeuwaarden
Project leader Compassion, 2013 - present
The first of its kind, I believe I am embarking on the wonderful challenge of giving content as well as body to the first project leader compassion within a medical institutional setting. I'm not really sure what i'm getting myself into, although the job feels right at this moment. After doing quite some work with Compassion via the foundation I am a part of, Jelle Prins from the MCL had help create this position which now finally stands. This will entail organising " Theme Days of Compassion" and finding ways that Compassion is incorporated through the organisation as well as the medical education. As many concrete ideas as there may be, this is also a blank canvas to be painted with the beautiful concept of bringing two things together that have always been together, that of compassion and of healthcare, and my job to somehow make it more tangible and practical throughout the organisation. LEAN is being implemented within the institute and I shall also be taking part in the MCLean project group that gets together trying to find ways to spread its manners of working through the organisation. Taking one thing in mind: I shall be doing this for one day in the week. Which means as high as my goals may be, I need to see how constructively I can use the relatively "little" time that I have at this position.
  • Compassion for Care
President of the Foundation, Speaker and Trainer, 2011 - present
Compassion for Care is a foundation that was initiated in October 2010 by a few medical students with the belief that Compassion should be at the core of healthcare. Since then Compassion for Care has become a movement, bringing together people from all over the world and all disciplines who believe that Compassion should be the fundamental basis of the current healthcare system. We were given the opportunity to speak at TEDxMaastricht and also collaborate with the Charter for Compassion both Nationally and Internationally. Currently Compassion for Care is working on several projects and dividing its worth focusing on Education, Research and the Movement (i.e. Community) My work entails being President of the Foundation as well as a core team member when it comes to all greater projects. Its an absolute honour to be a part of this team and work with them. Each individual has special story of their own and what touches me the most is the support we lend each other in all moments. I enjoy giving interactive sessions on ones personal story and what compassion for care stands for and what we believe in. I also give workshops and training sessions in which we take participants through an entire journey of why they started working within healthcare, how they keep hold of that and what we can do in order to change the system we and they work in. We are also exploring manners in which we can incorporate strategies on how we can make compassion a part of medical education
  • Nameshapers
    Co Director - Trainer - Coach, 2011 - present
What do you get when you get two young men, very diverse of background, complete opposites in so many ways, both trainers of origin, that have a passion for geeky things like social media? Exactly! You guessed it: Nameshapers. Coming together with a passion for training, becoming good friends, then finding a common interest in the online world, later on taking on the wonderful challenge of starting a company together in giving training, consulting and coaching. What we do is bridge the offline and online world. What I love about what we do is how we create an awareness of what the online world entails, specifically social media and how one can tell their story, either as an individual or as a organisation. Our approach has to do with 3 aspects - The mindset on the usage and "why" it can be used? - The tools and how to properly use them? - The culture where in one works and how they respond to its usage? The way we enjoy working is by tailoring our sessions according to our clients exact needs. We do so by means of in-company workshops, consulting on strategies and general sessions on the matter of online usage. Due to many people in more influential positions not knowing where to start or how to implement their own personal (often linked to their professional) usage of social media, we coach these individuals in one on one sessions. We do this by means of finding out what the needs and wishes are, analysing ones daily patterns and usage. Following that we find ways of making small and very effective changes in ones usage in order to translate their "offline" being with that of their "online" personality.
  • Healthcare Leadership Summerschool
    Team member and Trainer, 2012
The Healthcare Leadership Summerschool is a personal journey towards changing healthcare. Core elements are a doctor’s role in our society, personal leadership before general leadership, the mind-body connection and compassion. What I absolutely love about the HLSS are the people involved. Each one feels like family and each one works from their heart. They have taught me to consistently ask myself the question what it is I do and why I do it? I have the honour of working with the team on this project, now 2 summer schools already done we are now exploring the possibilities for the future Next to that I have been able to be a trainer and coach on both the HLSS events in 2012 and 2013.
  • Zero Generation
    Founder, Trainer
I have always believed that education and more specifically training has the power to change the world. This conviction comes from the belief that the transfer of knowledge, skills and wisdom comes from asking the right questions. Many years ago we embarked on a journey to start a wide range, multidisciplinary leadership summerschool. In 2008 we had our first version and now we are 6 editions further, together with a foundation that facilitates its organisation amongst other things. Zero Generation is a foundation that has been created by individuals that believe in the fundamental strength of training and being a trainer. It is something I personally discovered in 2005 and till today, is one of my greatest passions. Hereunder you can find a more formal description of the foundation: ------------------------------------------------------------------- Zero Generation is a multidisciplinary team of professional trainers, with European and Worldwide NGO experience in leadership, international project management, training and consultancy; with special interests in healthcare, engineering and organisational development. NGO’s, businesses and academic institutions require skills and competencies to grow. Due to limited accessibility to training, potential remains untapped. We aim at contributing to the empowerment and development of individuals and systems. Moreover we have established a multi-disciplinary platform for creating, acquiring and transferring knowledge, and for developing skills to contribute to capacity strengthening on an international scale. We provide services in training, events’ facilitation, and organisational establishment. In addition we organise tailor made events, including training courses, teambuilding and teamwork events and conferences.
  • VU medisch Centrum
    Team Leader Radiotherapy (Interim), 2013 - 2013
Whilst Simone Macrooy takes a leave of absence due to her pregnancy, I took over her position as one of the team leaders at the department of Radiotherapy at the VUmc medical center. There are 4 other team leaders and together we coordinate the development, guidance, (re)integration, coaching and improve the functioning of all the lab technicians working there. We form one whole team together with the specialist lab technicians and the head of the administration. My goal has been to see to what extent I can be of service to all my team members and help them the best way I can with their challenges and aspirations. Some of the specific tasks included some administration concerning working days, and all that has to do with the academic development of each person within my team. One of the tasks I took on was to organise a day where we came together with all the teamleaders, specialist lab technicians and head of the administration (Hei-dag) in order to discuss, reflect and build upon the experiences of the last year and how to continue working together as a unified team. This was great since I was allowed to dive into my bag of experience and exercises I have from being a trainer/facilitator. As intense as it was, it was a lovely experience that helped us grow together from that point onwards. What I love about the work here is how I involved I am with those in my team and how I was allowed to explore opportunities and possibilities within the department and the trust that I received from those around me in the manner in which I work. Cudo's to my teamleader Frederieke Vriends for the manner in which she let me be me and gave me room to try out those thing that lay were in resonance with my strengths.
