Invincible :

"Faith alone can weather the toughest storms and shine light on the path ahead"

I was told that more often than not, you end up getting skunked at this spot. I was told that the odds of a colorful sunset here were not good. When I first reached the ledge, I thought it was all true. The marine layer had consumed the sky, the horizon, the ocean and everything else but this sea stack. My initial thought process was to capture some kind of long exposure and process it as a black and white. About 10 minutes before sunset, the fog began to clear and the sky showed glimpses of that elusive color. Soon the entire sky was engulfed in flames and the light was so intense that it began to reflect off the water. In the thirty minutes that ensued, I got a whole range of images both left and right of this composition.
Good times with good friends!

Power of the Spirit: Columbia River Gorge

My first visit to Spirit falls was quite eventful. On reaching the "trailhead" Ryan Engstrom , Aron Cooperman , Michael Bandy and myself saw that it was littered with "No trespassing" signs and "24/7 Surveillance Cameras". Crestfallen, we returned to the hotel. On further research, I found out that exists a "legal" trail to the falls thanks to a friend, so we returned with a hope of capturing this beautiful waterfalls. The trail was really really steep and I soon realized how interesting the hike back to the car would be. But it was all worth it once I saw the waterfall. The water levels were so high! Mist was flying onto my face and the aquamarine water raged across making the river look menacing. I got the usual images and then tried to find a different vantage for showing the force of the water and this is what I came up with.

Fire Fall: Kalapana

"From seemingly nowhere, spilled glowing lava like cords of orange neon-lighting. In the blackness that engulfed the night, electric heat lit flowing streams that fell into the sea, disappearing in a cloud of steam with a sizzling splash."

The name "Fire Fall" has been used synonymously with Horsetail falls in Yosemite, but I can tell you with all certainty that it does not hold a candle to the fire hose phenomenon that I was lucky enough to witness in Hawaii. The last image I posted from here didn't have lava pouring out like this. That was the first day of my visit. On the second day, I setup shop as usual and thought about getting a closer perspective of the lava. About an hour in, I heard a loud cracking sound. First, I thought the ground under me was giving way, but I saw that the crust formed on the cliff's edge by the lava had given way and out poured lava like a waterfall. I couldn't believe my eyes! The fire hose actually became better and more dense after my visit, but nonetheless, I was happy to catch this phenomenon when it happened.

A Link Between Worlds: Arizona

"Mystical insight and enlightenment occur when the veil between the worlds is lifted, the worlds are bridged, the gap closes, and we cross over."

Late last year, I visited White Pocket for the first time. Instantly fell in love with the place. The phrase "That looks like Mars" gets overused a lot, but it really does describe White Pocket accurately. The rock formations are so amazing, with their varying textures and colors. Plus, you are dwarfed standing next to them. On this morning, I had witnessed a gorgeous sunrise and shot another comp which I will share in sometime. Before the colors in the sky went away, I ran around like a headless chicken to find another composition that would complement the light. I came to the spot you see here. This image is a stitch of 5 vertical frames at 16mm to accommodate the field of view. I stitched this manually to bring out the shapes and curves of the rock formation and not lose sharpness that comes with warping.

Aegaeus Awakens

"The waves broke and spread their waters swiftly over the shore. One after another they massed themselves and fell; the spray tossed itself back with the energy of their fall. The waves were steeped deep-blue save for a pattern of diamond-pointed light on their backs which rippled as the backs of great horses ripple with muscles as they move. The waves fell; withdrew and fell again, like the thud of a great beast stamping.”

Here's another image from Iceland, although it's not one that you'd expect from the diamond beach in Jokulsarlon. On this evening, furious winds were blowing and it was a real struggle to look at things when black sand and other particles were being hurled at your face. However, what this hostile condition created was amazing swells in the coast and water was spraying everywhere. On top of that, The setting sun lit up the water spray beautifully, and that "fog" you see there is actually water, dust and a bunch of other stuff lifted by the wind. Really unique conditions that I've not seen since.
What's the most intense and insane conditions you been out photographing in?

Invictus Mount Rainier National Park

"Mountains are the beginning and the end of all natural scenery. "

Last year wasn't a particularly great year for wildflowers at Rainier. However there were still some clumps of beautiful flowers here and there. After a long evening of futile hiking, I was walking back down the trail with family. Clouds had covered Rainier about an hour prior to sunset, and it for some time had looked promising, but the clouds turned into wisps right before sunset. About a few hundred yards from the trailhead, my wife spotted this patch of wildflowers. I felt that the stars would complement the rest of the scene and decided to take a twilight direction with this image.

Agni's Throne: Kalapana, Hawaii

Perhaps one of the most surreal and mind blowing experiences I've had as a photographer happened on this early morning at Kalapana. The hike in was quite exciting. Everything was blanketed in darkness, but an orange glow in the distance guided my way in. I wasn't alone, I had two of the best lava photographers with me and I could see why they were excited by every opportunity they got to photograph this phenomenon. When we eventually made our way to the cliff's edge, There was a rising plume of orange and yellow smoke. Everything else was consumed by it's vastness. Over the course of the next few hours, I witnessed the plume dance rhythmically in the wind, and in brief spells when the winds calmed, I saw molten lava entering the ocean, trickling down an 80 foot cliff. There were moments when an arriving wave would collide with its counterpart of fire, and cause an explosion that flew high into the air before depositing debris all around. I photographed several exposures catching this phenomenon. In terms of technical difficulty, this has to be one of the hardest images I've ever captured and processed. They lava was so bright that it blew out if the exposure was too long (pun intended). The explosions needed a slightly longer shutter speed and the land was pitch dark, so getting detail there meant waiting for morning twilight to arrive. This image is a blend of atleast 4 exposures if I remember correctly. Also, without that daring human standing atop the cliff, there is a sense of scale that is missing, atleast for me.

P.S : During the 4 hour window I just mentioned, I heard an almighty crack near the lava flow. A part of the cliff gave way and the lava began to spout out like a fire hose. It was one of the craziest, I repeat craziest things I have ever seen in my life.

Ode to Darkness:

Iceland is special for a number of reasons, and these amazing glaciers are certainly one of the important reasons why. Glacial blue is such a beautiful color and to see miles and miles of this color in all directions around me was an unforgettable experience. Abstracts are not my strong suite, but I tried my hand at some glacial abstract with a long lens. This ridge line looked like waves in the ocean frozen solid. I want to thank Alex Noriega for inspiring me and pushing me to go dark on processing this one. A big shout out to my buddies at Escaype who helped dial this one in too!

Convergence : San Diego

"The world is full of poetry. The air is living with its spirit; and the waves dance to the music of its melodies, and sparkle in its brightness.."

This is an image that I've been wanting to shoot for many years now. These tide pools are certainly world famous, but getting a good image from this spot with nice conditions has been very hard to come by. Usually, I would setup my composition and wait for the golden hour, and in the last minute, just as the clouds would begin to light up, the marine layer would appear and ruin what would have been a great sunset. Finally, thanks to escaype, I got the conditions I was looking for. The high tide provided a great complement to the shape of the clouds in the sky. All in all a great evening!
