Kreuzkirche, Dresden

The beautiful Kreuzkirche in Dresden has a long and turbulent history going back to the 12th century during which it has been destroyed and rebuilt five times. The last time it was destroyed was during the Allied bombardment of the city in 1945. By 1955 the gothic exterior had been reconstructed but work on the interior did not commence until 1995. Today the church is home to the famous Kreuzchoir who take full advantage of the church's excellent acoustics.

Dinant, Belgium

This sleepy town on the Meuse river belies a violent history. It's strategic location on a river along Europe's Franco-Germanic cultural fault line often made it a place to be fought over. Way back in in 1466, the aptly named "Phillip the Good" had 800 local inhabitants thrown in the river while the town burned after they rebelled against his rule. And lest that be put down to Medieval barbarity, one of the frist massacres of the First World War took place here in August 1914 when German soldiers executed 674 residents in one day. But it's hard to imagine such scenes as you look across the Meuse at dusk and watch Dinant's ancient beauty reflected in the water.

The Blue Mosque, Istanbul

It was a dull dreary winter's day in Istanbul when I shot this, hand-held. Cold and rainy outside, I decided to look for inspiration indoors and I headed to the Blue Mosque, the largest mosque in Turkey. Built 400 years ago close to the site of the much older Hagia Sofia, the Blue Mosque is one of the finest examples of classical Ottoman architecture and incorporates elements of Byzantine design. The interior is decorated with more than 20,000 handmade ceramic tiles.

TIP :
When shooting both female or male models it's always nice to get a real "eye catcher" in the shot. For me it's often the color red that really draws my eye so I always try to add something red into the clothing or background.

Do make sure however that you are careful with your backgrounds, we are "hardwired" to read from left to right and from top to bottom in the Western world, so if you have a strong red logo in the bottom left corner for example your eyes will go to that logo and start looking at the picture again, if you however have that logo on the bottom right or even worse top right part your eyes will leave the image way too fast.

So as always, it's not a matter of just adding something, it's also a matter of being careful and play with a little bit of psychology :D

For much more in depth tips and techniques check out my book "Mastering the model shoot" or head over to www.frankdoorhof.com for daily updates on techniques, tips, videos etc. (also sold there :D)
