Honey Bees VS Africanized Honey Bees

Be careful if you come upon Honey Bees. You never know if they could be Africanized, and that could be dangerous.
To understand the threat of Africanized honey bees, it is necessary to know something in general about honey bees and their behavior.

Honey bees are important beneficial insects and we would be in big trouble if they were all suddenly destroyed. Unless a honey bee colony is in a location that is close to people, pets or farm animals, it should be left alone.

The Africanized honey bee was first introduced to Brazil in the 1950s in an effort to increase honey production, but in 1957, 26 swarms escaped quarantine. Since then, the species has spread throughout South America and arrived in North America in 1985.

Africanized bees are typically much more defensive than other species of bee, and react to disturbances faster than European honey bees. They can chase a person a quarter of a mile. They have killed some 1,000 humans, with victims receiving ten times more stings than from European honey bees. They have also killed horses and other animals.

The major differences between Africanized and other Western bee types are:
• Tends to swarm more frequently and go farther than other types of honey bees.
• Is more likely to migrate as part of a seasonal response to lowered food supply.
• Is more likely to "abscond"—the entire colony leaves the hive and relocates—in response to stress.
• Has greater defensiveness when in a resting swarm, compared to other honey bee types.
• Lives more often in ground cavities than the European types.
• Guards the hive aggressively, with a larger alarm zone around the hive.
• Has a higher proportion of "guard" bees within the hive.
• Deploys in greater numbers for defense and pursues perceived threats over much longer distances from the hive.
• Cannot survive extended periods of forage deprivation, preventing introduction into areas with harsh winters or extremely dry late summers.

So, if you have bees and aren't sure which kind they are, call Safari Pest Control, LLC at 813-703-4673 and be careful. It's a jungle out there!

If you have a FLEA infestation, it is probably the Cat Flea! They are most commonly found on domestic cats and dogs, and can even infest nuisance wildlife, such as raccoons and opossums. Homes without pets can develop Cat Flea infestations if feral or wild animals are allowed onto the property.
There are nest fleas and host fleas. Cat Fleas are host fleas which means the adult flea remains on the host, being provided both food and shelter. Adult Cat Fleas will only abandon a host if they are dying or dead. Animals usually become infested when adult fleas are stimulated to emerge from their cocoons by host movement and exhaled carbon dioxide.
Pre-emerged adults are concentrated in host resting areas because flea eggs fall off the host’s body and accumulate where it spends most of its time. Wormlike larvae hatch from eggs and move down into the ground, carpet, or pet bedding to avoid light and desiccation. They primarily feed on adult flea feces, or “flea dirt”, which contains mostly undigested blood that dries and falls from the host. Pretty gross if you ask me!!!
Mature larvae spin a sticky cocoon that hides and protects pupae and pre-emerged adults. If not stimulated to emerge, adult fleas can remain in cocoons for several months.
Adult fleas on your pet are mainly treated by the vet or with over the counter products. If the host is a nuisance animal, it may have to be removed from the property by a pest control technician.
Make sure you pest control professional isn't just focusing on flea larvae, but indoor/outdoor host resting areas as well. The technician should add a growth regulator to prevent larvae from becoming adults so they can't reproduce. Vacuum pet resting spots before and after treatment to remove immature fleas and stimulate adults to emerge from their cocoons and come in contact with the insecticides.
Call Safari Pest Control, LLC at 813-703-4673 to eliminate FLEAS at your home. Your pets will thank you. It's a jungle out there!
