Introduction

In 1913, Emilio and Agripina Maldonado farmed land north of Oaxaca where they raised their ten children and served as leaders in the local town of Santa Maria Tinu.

As part of Emilio’s work, he dabbled in mezcal when he could grow agave on his land with his 10 children. When the locals would share Emilio’s mezcal, they would share great stories with one another. Those who shared the best stories were called Sacacuento.

Ventura Maldonado (Emilio’s son) migrated to the United States as a teenager, moving to Sacramento California where he became the foreman of a nursery for most of his career. After retirement, he moved back to his parents land and built a home on the property.

Today, Rudy and Claudia (Ventura’s daughter) Favila own this great land of 150 acres named Rancho Buenaventura. Rudy and Claudia have over 90,000 plants on this land and have thousands of agave plants in the ground.

Rancho Buenaventura is being developed into a maguey (mezcal and tequila plant) farm to support the growing demand of Sacacuento.

Rancho Buenaventura is situated approximately 40 minutes north of the mystic ruins of Monte Alban and 40 minutes north of downtown Oaxaca off the super highway. The property is located at kilometer 189 and 190, 10 kilometers before reaching Nochixtlan.
