This is my favorite thing I've read all day. I think "Fake Statistic Troll" might be my uber-favorite.
It may or may not be a good idea to attempt reading all the pieces responding to the Vergara decision, but it's definitely a mistake to read the comments section for any of them. If there is any group that has been emboldened...

Pussy Riot: It is harmful to the collective to confuse a campaign for prisoners' rights with our all-female separatist art performances

Wow. This is highly disappointing.

"Dear teachers,

"My youngest of three starts kindergarten tomorrow.

"Meanwhile, my older son and daughter are campaigning to influence their little sister's opinion. Will she love school, as her big sister hopes, or dread school, like her brother?

"At right is the countdown that my 7-year-old daughter has been keeping for the past 27 days. It is a countdown to her nirvana: the beginning of 2nd grade. But for my 5th grade son, it is a countdown to impending doom: the end of summer’s freedom.

"I am writing to you with the hope that my 2nd grade daughter will win this school debate—and that all my kids will love learning, even if they won’t all admit it."

I love this project, and think it's sad that someone's own mother would shame her this way. We need to stop this culture of body-shaming!

ICYMI: My group, Integrity in Education, joined the Center for Popular Democracy to release this report earlier this week. We found that charter operators in just 15 states were responsible for over stealing or losing $100 million in taxpayer money. The report includes recommendations to prevent this sort of theft and waste from recurring.

Funny thing, Piers: When you call people stupid and tell an oppressed community "I'm on your side, you dimwits," you're really not.

So adorable! This pup, who lives with her mom at the National Zoo, struggled when she was first born. She's doing great now :)

"As students at one of the wealthiest, most inaccessible universities in the world, we do have a place in this struggle. But that place is not in having a résumé-padding “eye-opening” experience at the expense of kids who need real teachers. It is our responsibility to stop. Stop pretending that these students just need a really passionate math teacher. Stop ignoring the elephant in the room: poverty. Stop speaking for people we have no right to speak for."

"Time and again, my white students write that "everybody's equal" is the "most important" thing their parents taught them about race. Time and again, a not-insignificant number of them then proceed to describe their present trepidation about a.) telling their parents they date interracially; b.) bringing home a Latino/a or black classmate; c.) Thanksgiving break, when everyone will silently tolerate the family member who makes racist comments; or d.) something else that reveals how deeply and clearly these students know this "most important teaching" doesn't mean a hell of a lot to their actual white experience."
We don't assume pat answers are adequate for enabling our children to learn to navigate relationships, nutrition, sexuality, religion, emotions or any other challenging reality. Why should race and racism be any different?

Now that they're trying to make Facebook as crummy as possible, I figure it's a good time to get more into G+. What should I be doing to make the most of it?

If you're interested in teaching & learning writ large, or "education reform" stuff pro or con, there are a bunch of G+ educators who post all or mostly public, and are not that much into Communities. There are also specific Communities for particular scholarly interests. Those are easier to find by going to your main Communities page first, then searching by keyword.  I tend to have a better learning and conversational experience here by emphasizing individuals and Circles, doing occasional forays into Communities. (For example, I saw this post because your 8/20 item about parents of white children rolled by and I checked it out.)
