#AprilTTRPGMaker Day 24: Most notable achievement?

I'd still say Blazing Rose tops the list. Designed, playtested, wrote, commissioned artwork, laid out, published. It's a shame I had the dubious wisdom of (a) doing the "ashcan" thing, and (b) putting it on Lulu of all places, but it's still the furthest I've ever gotten with a games project.

This is a pretty cool survey/quiz thingy! I'm a little surprised how low I scored on "Story", but based on their questions, by that they mean "enjoy reading reams of backstory text", which, eh, I can handle in a visual novel but not most other genres.

#AprilTTRPGMaker Day 23: People who've helped you?

I've already mentioned +Willow Palecek, for feedback and general design brain-sharing!

My core playtest group includes Willow, +Shari Corey, +Tim Jensen, and +Moth Chan. (Moth often also throws random game ideas my way, hah.)

Back in the day, I believe it was +Shreyas Sampat who gave me the "quit fretting and just go do it" kick in the pants on the Story Games forum.

#AprilTTRPGMaker Day 22: How do you document ideas?

On the go, Field Notes: https://buff.ly/2H6alrW

For bigger, all-at-once braindumping, that's Google Docs again: https://buff.ly/2F79nGS

In today's episode of Let's Play Arcanum, we do everything every townsperson in Shrouded Hills asks us to. Even when that means silliness like helping people fix things that we ourselves broke. All for the loot and XP!

#AprilTTRPGMaker Day 21: How many playtests?

You'll have so many playtests. 400 playtests!

Playtest until you forget there's supposed to be a point where it stops being playtesting and becomes just playing! Never stop playtesting!

#AprilTTRPGMaker Day 20: Favorite design tools?

Google Drive (drive.google.com) docs and spreadsheets are bread and butter. Basic editing, comments, revision history, and cloud backup, all at once.

I've been known to sometimes use Scrivener (https://buff.ly/2IcbNH1), but usually it's too organized for my thought process.

AnyDice (https://buff.ly/2HAKpF0) is fun to play with if you're doing any kind of dice-based randomization, to find what all the probabilities look like!

#TTRPGMaker Day 19: Game that's most essential to your design?

Whoops, I already answered that back on Day 13. Guess I should have read ahead a bit! Yeah, it's Primetime Adventures.

The next post in my Let's Play Arcanum series contains...

1. An apology to +Caelyn Sandel for not reading her advice carefully enough and thus screwing up her character build!
2. Hilarious catastrophes involving explosives!
3. Lots and lots of gross fantasy racism!

#AprilTTRPGMaker Day 18: Current inspiration?

I am super digging the legacy-lite* campaign dungeon crawl board game Gloomhaven (https://buff.ly/2vmQfVy). I'm not gearing up to make a Gloomhaven-alike RPG or anything, but there might be a few concepts that show up in the next Periapocalyptic draft, like unlockable character archetypes or level-up advancements that players other than the earner can make use of.

Amusingly, I realized that I wrote up something greatly resembling Gloomhaven as a Dungeons & Dragons Fourth Edition campaign variant, back in 4e's heyday: https://buff.ly/2JR7Rfs No great surprise that I've found it so compelling, then!

* I've discovered that some people get cranky if you put a board game in the "legacy" genre when it doesn't involve changing the fundamental rules as you go. In my book, it counts if you're making irreversible physical modifications to game components, opening sealed envelopes, and whatnot, but what do I know.
