A new image captured by NASA's Cassini spacecraft highlights an impact basin on the Saturn moon Tethys. Called Odysseus, the 280-mile-wide (450 kilometers) impact basin is nearly half as wide as the satellite itself.

The asteroid or moon that impacted is 10% of the size of the created or 28 miles wide as the created is 280 miles.

It is not unusual for moons to occasionally impact planets especially gas giants. also rings are from collisions and eruptions.

Rings are around the. Larger planets as gravity tear them apart.

Russia has formally notified its International Space Station partners that it will continue in the partnership at least to 2024, ending several months of doubts that were fueled by the current poor state of Russia’s relations with the West.

The definition of "Blue Moon" has evolved slowly to the modern "2nd full moon in a month" formulation. But what sky-watchers usually see is the same old grayish-white – unless a volcanic eruption filters the Sun’s reflected light. Science@NASA explains.

In a coincidence of cosmic proportions, the second full moon of July rises tonight, making it a so-called "Blue Moon" — and Blue Moon Brewing Co. will celebrate its 20th anniversary by painting the town red.

For the next six months, NASA's Saturn-orbiting Cassini spacecraft will get its final look at two icy moons -- one famous and one not so well-known -- before preparing for mission's end in 2017.

The fiery demise of ancient huts in southern Africa 1,000 years ago left clues to understanding a bizarre weak spot in the Earth's magnetic field — and the role it plays in the magnetic poles' periodic reversals.

At 1400 light years away, if we do pick up a signal, the civilization responsible could be long gone. They wouldn't hear any signals from Earth until at least the year 3,450 AD

The alien planet, called HD 219134b, is about 4.5 times more massive than Earth, making it a so-called "super Earth." HD 219134b lies extremely close to its host star, completing one orbit every three days, so its surface is too hot to harbor life.
