Overcoming difficult circumstances and long odds, 12 former foster youths will be honored tonight at a Guardian Scholars Program event hosted by SF State alum and KPIX sports anchor Dennis O’Donnell. The nationally recognized program has a 70 percent graduation rate, exponentially higher than the 4 percent graduation rate nationally for foster youth. Religious, community and educational leaders, including SF State President Les Wong, assembled during a news conference at the Cathedral of Saint Mary of the Assumption in San Francisco to address the crisis in black education. Nationally, the black student college graduation rate stands at a dismally low 42 percent, 20 percentage points below the rate for white students. Following the news conference, more than 1,200 San Francisco Unified School District students were recognized during the African American Honor Roll event at the Cathedral.

SF State is one of three universities to receive funding from the Dept. of Veterans Affairs to research and share local history found in San Francisco and Golden Gate National Cemeteries. The funds will help SF State conduct cemetery research and create educational materials for K-12 schools and the public to promote community engagement with local veterans’ history. http://bit.ly/2l1gUwL
