The new layout makes me want to get rid of everyone that reposts images and video with no in-depth commentary. I guess the new layout give me easy access to that capability. As a designer it is pretty; as a user it does not fulfill my goals for high-quality content...in fact I am now spammed with irrelevant popular pap. I guess I need to never ever use my All Circles view.

A few things: need to lock the boxes with a passcode. Need to be able to send the empty box back. Need RFI on the boxes so if they do get stolen, they can be found. General impression is: wicked rad.

Worst part about social media is logging on after a good friend/family member has passed away and being told you should connect with them.

Apple cake day! This is the recipe I've used for a few years now, always tasty. I doctor with extra spices. http://smittenkitchen.com/blog/2008/09/moms-apple-cake/

I've been recently reading The Information: A History, A Theory, A Flood by James Gleick. It is the story of data exchange told along the timeline of cultural and scientific events. Everything-as-data has been something I have been intuitively processing in my day-to-day life, so having a lot of my intrinsic understandings of my perceptions validated is nice. It has been frustrating from a standpoint of my lack of math knowledge.

I really think I could be a decent mathematician, if it weren't for lazy and inept teachers who were more interested in shuttling people through the system way back in high school. I am hoping it isn't gender-bias, but my math teacher was the football coach, too. I would go to school every day an hour early or stay an hour late to talk to him, but he would keep saying the same things over and over...which doesn't help someone out if they didn't get it the first eighty times you said the exact same thing. I know I'm not horrible at math; I was a peer tutor and had many kids come back to me and tell me if it weren't for me they wouldn't have passed.

Unfortunately, I am an interactive learner; If it isn't in a domain I already have a grasp on, I can't/don't read a book and feel as if I have mastered a skill. I gotta either do it, or in the case of math, have people to talk to about it. I build pictures in my head based on discussion and connect things there.

One of the fundamental problems with math literacy is that it isn't treated as a language. There aren't foundational abstracts to hang the framework on. If someone would have told the 9-year-old me that math was a way to describe interactions and abstracts that can be shown in the real world, I think I would have understood it a lot more than just being told, "Here, learn this, it is important." I learned Cartesian coordinates while creating image maps in HTML.

With these things in mind, I found something fun today that will appeal to information architects, Stark Trek lovers, and librarians:
