Today, after calling shortcut on a random alleyway, we found a school with a really cool mural around the perimeter. It was Where's Waldoesque, in that there were lots of characters, and the longer you looked, the more of a story it told. It blended traditional styles with modern comic art in a really cool way.
As we reached the unfinished portion of the mural, a Hayao Miyazaki-looking old man on a rooftop shouted down "DO YOU LIKE THE PAINTING?" I shouted back "YES!" Knowing that white beards and explorer hats are the Korean shorthand for artist, I added "DID YOU PAINT IT?" He confirmed, I told him I was an artist as well, and we shouted a conversation for several more minutes until his wife appeared on the rooftop and invited us for coffee.
They've been making art together for 45 years. Jeong Sungoo handles the lineart, his wife is the colorist, and their dog rolls in the paint and looks like a Jackson Pollack painting. We got to hear stories about doing set design for K-dramas in the 70s, doing murals all over the country, doing the talk show rounds, and got serenaded with his hand-made guitar. They even cooked us a massive dinner.
My shortcut turned a 10 minute walk into a 3 hour endeavor. But it was well worth it.
My Twitter timeline has been flooded with people excitedly posting pictures of their copies as they arrive, and I'm SO EXCITED everyone's so excited! I just got my own copy in the mail today! And I get to be on both sides of the SO EXCITED coin!
