Employment
  • Kitchology Inc.
Data Scientist and Software Architect, 2013 - present
As part of a small tech team at this startup, I develop machine learning and data analysis algorithms for food and recipe science. I also wear any other hat needed, from server and database management to launch planning to business process and software architecture.
  • Executive Office of the President of the United States
IT Project Manager, Office of Management and Budget, 2012 - present
In the Budget Systems Branch of the Office of Management and Budget, I’m responsible for the care and feeding of a large web application built on a Java EE stack that facilitates collaboration and enables development of the President’s Budget each year. I make sure our 90,000+ users are happy and ensure that all the impossible, must-have-today requests for new features are complete when needed. I’m also responsible for our UX design team, delivering style guidance, comps, prototypes and coded front-end solutions across many of our 50+ web applications. In addition, I manage several other websites, write lots of SQL, and improve our software development and project management tools and processes.
  • Social Security Administration
    IT Specialist, 2011 - 2012
In this continuation to permanent status of the Hardy-Apfel fellowship, I wrote software and performed data analysis and research to model effects of proposed changes to retirement program policy for the Office of Policy Analysis. In this capacity, I redesigned and re-architected the modeling software for better runtime performance and began the process of rewriting the software. I also continued in my role on the agency's Disclosure Review Board, analyzing data sets and documentation proposed for public release in order to make determinations about risk of disclosing personally identifiable information.
  • Social Security Administration
    Hardy-Apfel IT Fellow, 2009 - 2011
In this rotational leadership development program, I impacted each major program the agency runs. I led a research effort on health IT to improve disability claims processing, facilitated the development of the agency’s strategic plan, developed communications for the agency CIO, and led several web-based communications and full-stack development efforts in the Office of Open Government.
  • BAE Systems
    DSP Analyst / Software Engineer, 2006 - 2009
In the Sensor Systems division’s Advanced Technologies group, I developed software and associated mathematics and algorithms for DARPA-funded research projects using such technologies as VLF controlled-source EM sensing, tomography, compressed sensing, GPS tracking, and noise reduction.
  • University of Maryland at College Park
    Graduate Assistant, 2004 - 2006

Introduction
I'm a grad student, applied mathematician and software engineer, as well as a husband and a new father. I find a variety of scientific, mathematical and computational topics engaging and am always excited to discuss new ideas with others and to read about interesting concepts. I also enjoy a few hours here and there of hiking, judo, and playing music, as well as volunteering at church.
