#Unight8  US Sitrep for November 16th, 2013

To know where to start writing a sitrep for #Unight8US is difficult... it was such an intense operation that was planned months in advance. I've been on this operation since August, and the last three months of my life were absorbed by Unight. Along the way, I've had some incredible experiences with extraordinary people, and that's how I'd like to explain UnightUS to you all.
It began when I was contacted by +Jens Spaniel  and +caroline Bora Choain  about an international operation, and would I be interested in taking over the US Coordination for it? I passed off a few other obligations and said yes. I fell in love what they described to me, and over the next week my excitement for it became infectious as I described the operation to leaders from all over the US and began recruiting.
Yes, we would participate in the first around-the-world link. Yes, we would swamp our cities with PL8s. But we would and could do more.
I approached +Daniel Lawrence  about my idea to field the entire USA as an additional side-project for Unight, and found out he had been quietly reaching out to others with the same idea. By combining projects already in the works, we had the field plan we needed: Project Blue Light, Bermuda Triangle, Great Blue West, and Olas de la Resistencia were all absorbed.
Our plan began coming together. I recruited Daniel  and +Tim Johnston  as my East and West field coordinators, with +Miguel G  handling most of the Project Blue Light side. Without these agents, our operation would have failed... they stuck close by and worked hard.
Our state leaders were next. Without you, well-- you will never know the depths of my gratitude for what you did in pulling your people together with limited knowledge of the full scope of this operation.
Credit where credit is due: +Daniel Lawrence , +Tim Johnston , +Miguel G , +Steve Ball , +Scheurmann R. , +Steve Martin , +VAIN Vurxof , +James McFarlin , +chris rivera , +Mike McCabe , +Corey Peoples , +Chad Walter , +Adrian Michael Nida , +Zeke Cao , +Andy Lohaus , +Nathan Haug , +Bruce Kraemer , +John Spartan , +Aaron Ruff , +Thomas Peters , +Richard Wire , +Nathan Lindeman , +Lance LeBlanc , +Volta X , +Michael Finley , +William Olsen , Phil Painter, +Mike Kelley , +Raymond Cool , James Lynch,   +Paul Pawlowski , +Mark Guerra , +Clint Babb , +Pedro Owsik , +Erik Tate , +Peter Salvatore , +Steve Schwaller , +Thomas Sanford , +Joshua Wehmeyer , +Jackie Grove , +Juan Gonzalez , +lead foot , +Nick N , +Justin Melville ,

+Ricardo Antonio Cabral Mejía (Dominican Republic)
 +Charles Barnard (Bermuda)
+Adam Gilmore  & Zak, Canadian agents who threw the link to Greenland and CT.

Canadian Coordinator for Operation SHIELD +Steve B  : Canada had been planning their own coast-to-coast fielding project that we caught wind of while working closely with Canada for our around-the-world lnk. Catching our excitement, I explained to them our project and would they be interested in combining them to fill out North America? The answer was a resounding YES, and we had Canada on board. Thank you so much, Steve, and all Canadian agents that participated in this amazing operation. #Unight  could not have completed the main link without you, and for that I am so grateful. You guys made some of the most impressive drives and sacrifices for this operation, and I'm looking forward to reposting your sitrep here with all agents involved.

Special kudos to Lisa +Chems Mum  for rallying some last minute details in the west and +Bree D.  for your hard work on intel. Tim, you were crazy to have done that all from your phone and I applaud you for your commitment to this project even when you had all the reason in the world to quit over real life circumstances. To our entire intel team, you were all amazing. Thank you for staying up all night and all your hard work.

Keys:
Please take a minute to read the story of our international key exchanges, because it was truly an epic undertaking. At the end of it, we had moved keys hundreds of thousands of kilometers and circled the globe twice. Anadyr, Russia to Anchorage, FL... thank you, +Amanda Saunders . You did more for Unight and myself personally as a friend than anyone else.
The key exchanges were incredible. Some of the most notable key paths are mapped out here: https://mapsengine.google.com/map/edit?mid=zijBFFgKJpEk.kDckmGpQ0gLU

Go-Time:
The weeks leading up to this event grew tense. We began losing people to personal responsibilities and scrambled to find replacements. We heard from our global leadership that our link time for the US was 6:00 am EST, and asked our crew to bear down and redouble their commitment to UnightUS. We had to change portals several times, as our portals were chosen for their inaccessability and suddenly the link time made it impossible to access the parks we had chosen.

Last minute key exchanges happened the night before the event. Agents  tired from last minute planning buckled down for the long, 24-hr haul until our event.

Agents scattered to their stations and clearing started the night before. Lots of red bull was consumed. About 10pm, we realized there was a green blocking link running along the border of NM and Mexico. AZ, NM and Mexico agents scrambled to assemble before the message came down from NM lead +Mike Kelley  -- There is no reception in that town. One agent had booster equipment, but it was 3 hrs away. Agents questioned the long drive if they were to arrive with no signal, but some were willing to try, just waiting for the order. Six hours of scrambling and brainstorming went into this when suddenly, a seemingly random L3 blue player took down the link. Cheers erupted. We could now complete the field from Los Angelos to Cabo to UT. A few minutes later, however, Mike brought something odd to my attention. Zoomed in on the offensive portal, you could see "__ has captured their first portal", which was suspicious for a player with 30k AP. The player was also unresponsive on comms, leading to the sinking feeling that someone had spoofed the blocker down. Knowing we couldn't let this operation be tainted, I announced to the awaiting teams that our field to Cabo was scrapped. Millions of MUs lost and one of our most solid fields in the West, gone.

We pushed on. Sudden blockers out of seemingly nowhere lead countless agents on long drives. There were several near-misses with vehicles hitting deer in the middle of the night, (including +David Manvell  who put himself in the ditch avoiding hitting one) and one Florida agent +Kevin Bruner  took down a link blocking the FL coast by driving to a remote area with a bear standing guard at the portal.
We watched breathlessly as two L8 ENL agents in Victoria, TX took out blue fields in preparation for the TX anomalies the next day. They came less than a mile from our prepped portal and passed on by without touching it. Ghost links in Tallahassee, FL nearly gave us all a heart attack, but a solid report and a quick response from Niantic allowed us to keep pushing towards our goal.

Utah and Connecticut have the most amazing stories of all, with agents hiking in the dead of night to take down blockers at Delicate Arch in Moab and CT agents climbing the jetties to build their portal at Saybrook Lighthouse. Everyone came home weary and safe.

Last-minute blockers appeared in Long Island minutes before the links were to go up, and agents scrambled to the scene. Dominican Republic agents ran a few minutes behind and we all held our breath as the last blocks came tumbling down and our agents stood ready with their fingers thumbs on the 'link' button... we waited til 6:01 am EST...waiting for global's command... where is global's command? 6:03... no command. Links began popping all over the world, and we were clear in the US -- GO GO GO! -- came the link command. "Did she say go?" said adrenaline-pumped voices trembling.... and the links popped. Fields popped. Two hours later of fighting blocks later, our goal had been achieved, and no more fields could be made. Jacksonville, FL hub was jarvised and we called it a day. 1.26 billion mind units all over the world, and the US had contributed by making some of the biggest fields in Ingress history.

Special achievement awards to: Amanda Saunders for flying for keys, +Eric Johnson   (flyboy1 and copilot Scarlett kahlo007), the pilot who made a next-day flight from Miami to Gainesville to deliver Merida keys in time for the shard departure and Unight, +Tzafrir Rehan   our global operation leader and the entire global team, CT and NEFL Resistance for doing shard-duty all night last Saturday-Sunday and then this operation overnight yesterday. +Linda Besh   for funding one of the agent's flights that facilitated key exchanges. +Adam Gilmore    and son Zak, who drove several hours to Gaspe, CA to then sleep in the car overnight to flip the Gaspe portal back and forth to a L8 with the new cooldown rules. You two are rockstars and my own personal heroes. Way to go, Zak :) Nice job throwing the first ever link to Greenland!! Agent +Anton Khudozhnik who flew to Anadyr...there are no words for what you did for us. Please, everyone, read the Russia key transfer story. There were so many amazing feats and transfers and personal sacrifices that I can't even begin to mention, so I ask that you list any that I have missed in the comments below. Let's honor our fellow Resistance heroes.
