Coder[xx] - a resounding splash in a rather still and brackish pond...
It's been about two weeks since the inaugural CodeChix hyper-technical conference ( Coder[xx] ).  And I'm still recovering from it.  To all the nay-sayers (both companies and individuals) who thought this is something that is not needed given the plethora o...

My dream coming true... fingers crossed
A dream and a hope that I had 4 years ago is finally coming to fruition - all due to the gumption and hard work of a handful of volunteers who all decided at the end of July that they would really like to make my dream come true. And that they really didn't...

On panels and interviews...
I was on a panel interview today regarding the topic of "Women in Technology"/"Diversity". And it reminded me why I stopped doing interviews and panels altogether. It was nerve-racking.  I had lots of make-up on (necessary according to the really nice woman...

Mentorship... and hurdles

I know that part of the benefit to the mentor was to off-load work, but since I know both of them I can say that the offloaded work was well chosen; that is, it's meaningful work, not getting rid of the nasty stuff that no one wants to touch. (We can talk about it more specifically in IRC later if you are interested. I'm reluctant to publicly name the people involved only because I don't know if they would both be OK with it.)

For my part, I have a hard time doing this kind of thing. I'm not good at delegating; I like what I do and would generally prefer to do it myself. That's one of my weaknesses (I hope that doesn't sound too immodest).

I see the difference between the two kinds of mentoring.  I don't really understand the kind that the article talks about; I have no experience with it on either end.

On Code Reviews - Part 1 of 3
I've been pondering writing about this topic for a while and never really had the time to corral my thoughts and write it up.  Until I flew to GHC and had time at the airport and on the plane :). This is not an exhaustive coverage of code reviews and is mea...

+Tané Tachyon I didn't realize that your use case is a possibility, having always worked in teams for the last 23 years.  Thanks for the different perspective.  That statement was for engineers who had worked in teams and still didn't do code reviews.

Building a Theremin using an Arduino for all of $40
We had an excellent workshop in May on the Arduino Uno and used it to build a Theremin !!  Our very own Sushma Rao (represented CodeChix at Grace Hopper 2014 for her OpenCL talk with Sthiti Deka) organized this event.  And it was a crowd pleaser for sure.  ...

Wow - someone actually remembered my talk from GHC 2012 !
I attended a Systers/GHC meetup this evening at Google and was blown away when a young girl walked up to me and said: "Rupa, I wanted to say Hi again.  I met you in 2012 in Baltimore at GHC and still remember your talk on Negotiation!  It was so memorable."...
